Reading Alberto Aquilani’s comments after Italy’s 2-1 victory over Spain last night, I saw a pattern emerging in how some Reds players have responded to questions about their futures. Aquilani said:

“I’m calm. People talk a lot of rubbish about me. It’s not true that LFC aren’t giving me a chance. I feel like they appreciate me. I’m at a big club, I’d love to stay and play. But the market closes Aug 31. We’ll see.”

Aquilani believes he is appreciated by the Reds because he has started many pre season matches, but he is still uncertain about his future because Liverpool’s management haven’t explicitly told him that he would like to stay. This response is very similar to another player, whose future is in question, Christian Poulsen:

“I haven’t heard anything from Liverpool; I am trying to be fit for the new season. So I think they want me at the club and I am happy to be there and unless they tell me something different, I am a Liverpool player for the coming season.”

Again, he is assuming he is staying because the Reds have not told him that they wish to sell him. The player’s future looks to be in limbo despite most Reds fans believing he is surplus to requirements at Anfield. The same seems to be the case with Emiliano Insua. The Argentine has been playing with the reserves since playing some part in Liverpool’s first team plans in pre-season, and is now also uncertain about whether he will be staying or leaving. On his Twitter page he said:

“Good afternoon everyone, some days without tweet, I want to say that I will not tweet until my future is decided… It’s a moment to be with the head up and relax. Keep training hard and wait until someone speak with me to know the situation. Thanks to all.”

With the imminent arrival of Jose Enrique, it maybe the case that Insua will be departing the club sooner rather than later.

    Aquilani is NOT in limbo.

My understanding is that Aquilani wants a permanent deal, but Italian clubs don’t seem to be convinced yet that he is worth a permanent deal and only want to loan him. Therefore I think he is prepared to keep his head down and prove himself to be a class player at Liverpool then maybe next season 2012-2013 an Italian club might come in for him and Liverpool will get the sort of money they paid for him back!!
