Steven Gerrard is expected to return against Brighton tonight, and it will be intriguing to see where Kenny Dalglish fits the Liverpool captain back into the team. Kenny has been using a 4-4-2 more often than not this season, and with Charlie Adam suspended for the Carling Cup tie at the Amex stadium, Gerrard could very easily replace the Scot in a like-for-like change.

Many Reds fans, myself included, would like to see a return to the 4-2-3-1 formation which worked so well under Rafa Benitez, as well as under Kenny Dalglish for a few games at the end of last season. For tonight’s game, the best way this could be implemented would be to have Lucas and Jay Spearing as holding midfield players while Gerrard could play in a more attacking midfield role, as he did when he used to play behind Fernando Torres.

A suggestion that this maybe Dalglish’s future intention to switch formations from 4-4-2 comes from Director of Football Damien Comolli when asked about why Alberto Aquilani was loaned out to AC Milan:

“Kenny and the coaching staff felt he [Aquilani] would play in a certain position. As I told Alberto during the summer, unfortunately in that position is someone called Steven Gerrard and it would have been difficult for Alberto to play. There were different reasons. There were tactical reasons, the fact he was playing in this position and also we felt it would have been very difficult to keep him here not playing regularly.”

For sure, it doesn’t mean we will play 4-2-3-1 in every match, but I think that Dalglish maybe attracted to the switch, especially after the difficulties we faced playing against Tottenham using 4-4-2.

what you are saying is probably very close to the mark but I think the same formation 4.3.1.2 with Gerard as the 1 leaves a problem in midfield as it leaves no room for wingers, but 4.2.4 with Henderson and Lucas as the holding 2 players and Kuyt, Gerard (slightly withdrawn) Suarez and Downing you could say 4.2.1.3 in that formation. I was a big fan of Carrol when he was at Newcastle and the big fella will produce eventually but he does need the service and with the current personel I can’t see him getting it which is why he isnt mentioned above.
