Aspas LiverpoolLIVERPOOL FC have been linked with the Spanish forward for some time and it is rumoured that he will join the club when the transfer window opens in July.

So who is Iago Aspas?

Iago Aspas Juncal was born in Moana, Pontevedra on August 1 1987 and was brought through the youth setup of his home town club Celta de Vigo.

His promising football ability promoted him to the first team where he made his debut during the 2007/2008 season while the club were playing in the Segunda Division. He then joined the first team permanently for the 2009/2010 season after a spell with the reserves.

Aspas scored a career best 23 goals during 2011/2012 as Celta Vigo were promoted to La Liga after a five year absence.

Iago made his La Liga debut on 18th August 2012 against Malaga CF, losing 1-0. He scored his first La Liga goal against Osasuna in a 2-0 win for his team.

During his time with Celta Vigo he has won The Zarra Trophy (2011/2012). This trophy is awarded annually by the Spanish sports daily MARCA to the Spanish player with the highest goal total in the domestic leagues. It is named after the former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra.

At the Liga de Fútbol Profesional awards (they are similar to the PFA Awards here in the UK) Aspas won the award for best forward for his performances and goals which got Celta Vigo promoted to the top flight in 2011/2012.

This season he has been the star performer in a struggling side with 6 assists to go with his 12 league goals.

Blessed with good pace and fiercely committed, he is also a clinical finisher.

As of 30th May 2013 Aspas has scored 60 goals in 130 appearances. The 5ft 9in tall forward can play off the striker or in a wider position, and would fit neatly into Brendan Rodgers’ mobile attacking trio.

It will be interesting to see if Aspas will arrive to join the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini.

I am a lifelong Liverpool supporter from Huyton Liverpool just like Stevie G and go all over the world supporting my team I go the games in my wheelchair as I suffer from Cerebral Palsy however that does not stop me having a ball cheering on the World’s Best Team.
I write a weekly column talking about various topics whether that is tactical analysis of matches, opinion pieces, looking through the archives of previous matches, former players and current articles on Brendan and the first team.
It is great being part of the first class writing team at Live4liverpool.com and bucking the trend in being the first woman to write for the site.

  • Jesse says:

If what i have read about him is all true, then he will be a good acquisition but i would have prefered jovetic

  • Erin says:

  • Azabo says:

I think that is good acquisition for the reds

  • maik says:

Not exciting. A back up player probably

  • mubarik says:

since we have l.suarez daniel sturidge ans fabio borini i think we dont need many strikers but we need midfielders so i prefer christian Eriksen over Iago Aspas

    • Cuauc says:

We don’t quite have Suarez, and the jury is still out on borini considering he has barely played… Suarez is pretty much gone IMO

      • TaintlessRed says:

I don’t think Madrid actually want him. Perez said he liked him as a player but things are not always possible. They have been, far, far more assertive in regards Bale. But if he does want to go there are other clubs who’d pay for him.

My hope is his reputation works against him.

If Suarez does go then we will look to use the money to get a bigger name replacement. Aspas will more likely challenge Downing fir a wide position and play more centrally in early cup rounds.

Borini – squad player until proves his worth over a long period of time and stay’s fit

Sturridge – again like above cant keep getting these spells out of the game, until he can keep fit and play 90 minutes every week at least he is not more then a squad player!

Liverpool need to face up and start acting, but buying better players, and that’s the long and short of it.

    Carroll out
    Skrtel out
    Spearing out
    Pacheco out
    Ngoo out
    Shelvey out
    Wilson – gone
    Flanagan out
    Suarez out
    Downing out
    assiadi out

that above brings in – over 80 million – club adds 30 mill for players then we could and should have 110 million and i want it all spent in just one summer.

even then we have more chance of adding 5- 6 decent players rather then these bucket shop crap.

FSG don’t care what fans want. FSG are here to make money not spend it

    • Brigadier says:

LOL. Why dont you donate your own salary to FSG then?!

    • TaintlessRed says:

Sturridge’s record has been fantastic. I’d stick with Shelvey as a squad player and see how he develops. Otherwise agree.
