HollandACCORDING to TalkSport, Liverpool’s hopes of signing Feyenoord defender Stefan de Vrij have suffered a severe setback, with the player distancing himself from a move to Anfield.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is believed to be focusing mainly on reinforcing his defensive options this summer following the retirement of Jamie Carragher and the uncertainty over the future of Slovakian Martin Skrtel.

The Northern Irishman is particularly looking to focus on the centre-half position, despite having already secured a deal with Manchester City for Kolo Toure.

One of his primary targets is de Vrij, as the Dutchman’s form in the Eredivisie has attracted a lot of speculation about his future, with some reports suggesting he may soon be on the move.

But despite de Vrij being mooted as one of the country’s hottest young talents, the 21 year old has only recently signed a new deal with Feyenoord, keeping him at the club until 2015 and de Vrij insists that he is not interested in leaving the club this summer, and that he is content playing for the Dutch outfit.

As quoted by TalkSport, he said: “I just renewed my contract with Feyenoord [until 2015], so I will play for them next year.”

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.
