DANIEL Sturridge, who picked up an ankle injury whilst on international duty with England in their clash with the Republic of Ireland, is set to resume his first-team duties ahead of schedule.
There was much speculation amongst the fans and media alike regarding the severity of the 23 year-olds injury and the length of his layoff; with some even suggesting that the England striker would remain out until September.
Such speculation was soon quashed by an official announcement on the club’s website, which stated:
“Sturridge’s ankle injury has been reviewed by a specialist.”
The announcement also indicates that the club are ‘hopeful’ that the striker will return to full fitness by the beginning of the 2013/14 Premier League campaign.
However this would mean that “Studge” will miss Liverpool’s highly anticipated pre-season tours of Australia, Thailand and Indonesia respectively.
The former Chelsea man has made an excellent start to his Liverpool career – scoring 10 goals and providing 3 assists in his 13 league games for the Reds, establishing himself as a regular fixture in the starting XI, effectively becoming Liverpool’s first-choice striker.
With talisman Luis Suárez ruled out of Liverpool’s first 6 competitive games of the 2013/14 campaign, Liverpool simply cannot do with another player of such influence sidelined for one reason or another.
