LFC wingerACCORDING to Sky Sports, Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing has revealed that he does not want to move elsewhere, as he wishes to stay at Anfield and stake his claim for a place in the first team squad.

Downing was omitted from Brendan Rodgers’ plans at the start of last season; this action stirring rumours that the 28 year old may be on his way out of Anfield, but he did begin to feature much more in the latter stages of the season and produced a number of impressive performances.

These performances from Downing caught the attention of several other clubs who were interested in bringing him in; though Downing is insistent that he is not going anywhere and plans to fight for his place at Liverpool.

Downing, speaking to Liverpool’s official website, said:

“I’m here to stay, I’m enjoying it, especially last season when I got a good run in the team. Hopefully that will continue, and I need to work hard. I want it to continue. It’s why I came here, to play in a successful team.”

Liverpool’s overseas fans are also admirers of Downing, it has transpired, with the England international being greeted at Indonesia with a flag saying ‘Stay here SD19 – don’t go away.’

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

No. You Need to go. You have never been, you are not and you will never be good enough…I dont know what kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli saw in this guy and why they went for him when Mata was available for the same price, but that was an utter waste of money. 20 million down the drain…There is no place for mediocre overrated british players in our team! He should go back to aston villa where he belongs.

To think that we could have had mata instead of downing in our squad brings tears of blood to my eyes….
