Liverpool targetsREPORTS begun to surface towards the end of last week that Henrikh Mkhitaryan will not be heading to Anfield after all, but instead looks likely to join Champions League finalists, Borussia Dortmund.

The Guardian, The Daily Mail, and Mirror have all come out with stories about how the Westphalian club have seemingly beaten Liverpool FC to the signature of the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder. Although these reports could be further speculation in the on-going saga that has surrounded Mkhitaryan, if true they would be a serious blow.

Much had already been made about the abilities of the Armenian midfielder and Liverpool fans had long been awaiting his arrival as a marquee signing. If Brendan Rodgers and management at Anfield had secured the signature of the Shakhtar player then it could have been a clear sign of the direction in which the club was headed.

With the uncertainty surrounded the future of Luis Suarez, the need for Liverpool to prepare for the loss of the Uruguayan was never more immediate. Although it remains uncertain if Suarez will stay or go, a player of Mkhitaryan’s calibre would have been a welcome addition to the team no matter when he was added.

At times last season Liverpool’s attack was void of bite and their play lacked a creative spark but Mkhitaryan could have possibly provided some remedy to this situation. If the reports of his signing with Borussia Dortmund prove to be true then Liverpool will need to look in another direction.

Brendan Rodgers has hinted that he is not done strengthening his squad this summer and has implied that he may look to add a creative, attacking option, as well as, an additional player to slot in at centre-back. For some these are necessities, as is the signing of a physical, defensive midfielder who can distribute the ball and orchestrate the attack from behind.

As far as an attacking midfielder is concerned, Liverpool may once again turn their gaze to Christian Eriksen. The Danish youngster from Ajax certainly has plenty of potential and his best years ahead of him. Indeed, there may have been some who would have rated him above Mkhitaryan except that the Dane is not quite as experienced.

Sticking with Ajax, Liverpool have long been rumoured with Toby Alderweireld, Eriksen’s teammate at the Dutch club. Alderweireld would add youth to the back line and potential. He would also challenge for a spot at the centre-back position and would be more than capable of earning a starting spot outright.

As for a defensive midfielder, a man high on many a list is Celtic’s Victor Wanyama. At only 22 the Kenyan has impressed for the Scottish champions and has made a move to the Premier League likely. However, Liverpool may need to act fast to sign Wanyama as both Southampton and Cardiff are circling.

The loss of Mkhitaryan’s signature, if proven to be true, could be a serious blow to Liverpool’s aspirations. Luckily for the Merseyside club the summer is far from over and there is plenty of talent left on the table.

  • Joe says:

Eriksen is good, but doesn’t have the goals in him that Mkhitaryan does. BR wanted an extra 20 goals on last season, Mkhitaryan seemed the ideal fit. Losing Suarez on top of that leaves us search for around 45 extra goals next season and we’re not even trying to compete with Swansea for Bony! LFC are screwed.

    • no sheep says:

oh my god! you are wasted on this site. has lfc sold suarez cause i don’t think the have? who has Mkhitaryan joined cause i thought he was still at shaktar?

      • Paul LFC says:

        Idiot

      • Anthony Cowan says:

        Mkhitaryan has joined Shakhtar .

        • David says:

The funny thing is if mikhataryan was rubbish on football manager, and we bought him for 6 million everyone would be complaining about signing him

Does anyone actually know that he is better than aspas? I certainly don’t both look good on youtube

          • realist says:

Typical childish fan. Bases his opinions on YouTube clips !

          • David says:

I wasn’t basing how good we’re there on YouTube. If you had a brain you would realise I was saying that all of you are rating players by their price tag, how good they are at football manager and YouTube.

The truth is no one knows how good they are until, you watch them play week in week out

So have faith in what Rodgers is doing, he bought continuo for 8.5m

          • realist says:

He also bought total rubbish Allen and Borini and Assaidi for 29 million !!

The guy is a cabbage of a manager. Aspas is not top player. No one else even wanted him

    • Margus12 says:

Who says we’re losing Suarez, The Mirror? The club has said that he’s not for sale. As soon as he returns to the club and is back in the fold, he’ll knuckle down.
As for an extra 20 goals this season, we’ve already got that with Luis Alberto and Aspas.

  • Erin says:

No mark manager and no Europe. Depressing but true.

    • no sheep says:

the guy has more footballing knowledge in his little toe than you will ever have. and you bash him. depressing but true.

      • Paul LFC says:

Everyone has more knowledge than u . Total fool

        • no sheep says:

did you come up with that all by yourself paul? good for you, five gold stars.

          • Erin says:

In 35 and supported my club for the last 20 years. Football knowledge ? Yes , for a mid table manager he has got more knowledge than me. I am a supporter, I don’t train people, scout people and spend millions.

I am a manager. If I hire useless people like Borrini , Allen, asaidi and co and make mistakes like BR. Trust me, my boss will ask some questions.

          • Wayne lynch says:

Well said Erin . I think there are some people on here with more of a clue than Brendan anyway .it wouldn’t be hard

      • Erin says:

Oh, guess who we are linked with a replacement for mikhtarian? Sigurson. Did you know he played for swansealona ?

  • Marshall says:

Am more worried defensively we need victor and pap to make us competetive and solid.we have to many soft players come october these 7million bargins wont be equal to the task.

    • roythered says:

totally agree, Brenda should address our soft centre.

      • Marshall says:

Imagine playing chealse, man city totenham or man u with our current crop of midfield or defence…

  • majwega robert says:

ayre and fsg are a disgrace to a big team like liverpool.21m got and 23 spent simple fsg hasnt bought.if u boast tu b barca with almancia each year it spends not less than 48m.ayre lied to his brain dat u dnt need to b in CL .to a big name.mkt gone.suarez,torres,arbeloa,javier.u luk at our team if teams like arsenal can bid our players then we have become todlers.teams wic progress have neva stopped to spend big.if u wait to b bvb in premier league i cry.how can we even not bid fo mktariyan?imagine suare

  • Ray says:

Its now true that the Americans do not have the financial clout to compete. How can they be offering 12 million pounds for a player of that caliber like Mitranyan? There is no sense of direction in LFC since the Americans ventured into LFC over the past 8yrs.I can’t see LFC making the best 5 how much the best 4.LFC will soon become a mid table club if care is not taken.Rogers talks too much I don’t think he knows what he wants.LFC needs at least 6 players more.1.Striker2.A strong defencieve midfielder3.Creative midfielder 4.A left back 5.Two central defenders. If LFC fails to get these players LFC cannot make the first 4.

    • roythered says:

True, but the fact is we are a mid table club now. FSG have not invested much into the team, Brendas’ signings won’t alter our league position, they’re just young potential FSG will sell on if they make it. That’s the reason we ever got a top manager, he would want a team to compete! Suarez has realized he’ll ever play with top players, or under a top manager at Anfield, so he’s off. FSG saved us from administration and i thank them for that. Next season will be huge for LFC, get it wrong and the fans will demonstrate.

    • Sausage says:

      The calibre of mkyritan???
The guy scored 20+ goals in the ukrainian league, not really the most challenging league in the world. Who else plays in that league?

Before we got linked to this guy nobody had heard of him, who says he was ever a target. Its all chinese whispers atm, wait till the window closes before you judge. The 4 signings we have made are better than the players released (carra aside)so its looking good. Alberto for jonjo, aspas for spearing, reina has not been himself for time now, he used to save pens all the time.Toure will be vocal and isn’t slow.

Another clever mid and a young solid defender, and we can be strong.

Carrol was dump and aspas will score 10+ just being tenatious

  • ferdi says:

Br is a man who want players rather for cheap or on free transfer.how the *R we gonna challenge for 4th place?

  • Wolex says:

Rodgers check ur live u will soon leave liverpool, asenal idealogy will nt help u

    • Marshall says:

It takes true fans to accept when you are being screwed..rogers is and fsg are killing the lfc brand guesss we need a russian oroil rich asian to buy them out.barca areand even guadiola have shifted to the bundersleage yet we still trying to sign some rougues from spain to take us to top 4…deluded

  • Auwalu kiru says:

pls,buy xabi alonso, anderwereald, erickson, ben arfa, forgate mktyan. never walk alone.

  • simon says:

I keep hearing that we are moving forward with BR. Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I can’t see it. I believe we went backwards last season and we are further away from challenging for silverware than ever. We need more quality players just to stand still in this transfer window. If Suarez goes we will more, we will need some incredible players or we will be in full reverse. Suarez helped us patch over some pretty big cracks last year. He was an inspired signing that we should keep at any cost. I don’t believe our current management have the talent or the appeal to bring in the likes of a suarez again without him being at the club. This is make or break for our beloved club, get it wrong and we will have to sack the lot and start again.

    • Finn says:

Were not moving forward at all. Only deluded fans and small kids think we are . It’s all propaganda by the club. If they tell us hundreds of tines that we are improving , there will always be a few sheep who fall for it

      • Sausage says:

Mate we won more games, scored more goals and finished higher in the league than last season, or was that just propaganda?

        • realist says:

Wooooooo. Where did that get us again ?
          …oh yeah 7th and 3 early embarrassing cup exits . Super !

        • Paul LFC says:

Season b4 we got to two cup finals .and had respect. Now under Rodgers we r a joke

          • Sausage says:

Look at the teams that have got to the final of the cups.

The league is the only cup we need to be challenging for.

You lot slate rogers for his lack of ambition yet count the milk cup as an achievement.

We will earn our respect next season when we tear teams apart

      • agf1968 says:

We are moving forward – its just a shame we are facing in the wrong direction.

      • LFC2710 says:

What a clown…. 20 goalsorr scored and only 3 additional conceded!! Not moving forward eh?? TAXI….

    • roythered says:

Our current management are’nt up to it and Suarez knows it, that’s why he’s off. FSG i fear have F@cked up.

  • ayo aderinoye says:

please dont sell suarez keep him, will need him this season and buy experience players.

  • Tmoney says:

please buy what u want to buy and stop wasting time, before other clubs beats you to all your tergets.

  • Precious Ndubuisi Chima says:

I dnt knw wht is wrong with FSG and Ayre, Br is trying his best 4 Lfc but Fsg and Ayre are not helping atall. We need Jackson Matinez or Wilfred Bonny to replace our controversial Suarez. We also need Erickson and 2 experience defenders for us to come out of top4

    • roythered says:

Rodger was bought in because he’ll toe the FSG line. That’s why Martinez turned them down, he wanted to have a team he could build, not to have a bunch of hopefuls to sell after two years.

  • SOLACE HARRISON says:

i rest ma case…….we just need a saviour at diz juncture

  • Odoh says:

Well 4 dose of u saying br is taking us backwards…i would say u v no choice oda dan keep suporting d team or jst suspend being an lfc fan untill atleast afta he is proved a failure…n dat woul take atleast one season…xo???wats ur choice

  • Charlestumu says:

Am confuse about so caled fsg an mr yre

  • Anthony Cowan says:

I think really all we can do is rely on Rodgers system this season as he certainly isn’t being given the money to spend . I trust Rodgers more than I do the owners . I think the only way we get back to the top is if L.F.C punch above their weight in the league and just get into top 4 then we will maybe see more money spent on quality players but this would take a massive effort buy the players and I feel we have to many “nice boys ” in the team and not enough grafters and this does concern me. Sometimes I feel we are being choosy about players and if Eriksen of Ajax and Denamrk and Papadopoulos of Schalke/ Greece wants to come then take them as if we slip further down the league no top players will want to come. I can see us regretting not taking them . I hope I get proved wrong .

    • Margus12 says:

I’ve watched Eriksen on a number of occasions and i’m yet to see what all the fuss is about. I can’t be alone either in being underwhelmed since NO club is beating down Ajax’s door to sign him. Papa missed most of last season with a serious injury, so it might be wise to see if he’s fully recovered from that before making a move.

  • Charlestumu says:

    In-wayama-erikson or henrkh-sakho

  • frae says:

We need alonso back to add sum expirence n all who r say top 4 pls lfc is beta than dat by a long.victor wanyama wnt b a bad signing to.I hope suarez stays cos if he does than I believe we can challenge for da title cos we jst need consistentcy n we’ll succeed.can’t wait for new season to start, interestn tyms for lfc ahead.

  • Margus12 says:

The only time Liverpool’s attack lacked bite or creativity was at the start of the season before we bought Sturridge and Coutinho. As for Mkhtaryan, i keep reading that he was Liverpool’s top target and how Liverpool have missed out on him but if he was our top target we would have moved for him first. Also the people from Shaktar Donetsk keep inststing that Borussia Dortmund were the only club to bid for him and that they had heard nothing from Liverpool. No one at Liverpool has ever said we were after him. Don’t believe everything you read

    • Wayne lynch says:

Shakhtar confirmed Liverpool made contact , but offered no bid. It was FSG playing games trying to get shakhtar to reduce price

      • Margus12 says:

If FSG were playing games and trying to get Shaktar to reduce the price, it still doesn’t explain why Liverpool didn’t bid. If he was Liverpool’s top target, like i keep reading, Liverpool would have put in a reduced bid like Dortmund did and slowly increaded it until they came to a compromise. However, as you say Liverpool never bid anything which suggests he was one of the players we looked at but decided that he wasn’t for us.
Another thing i noticed is that none of the big clubs in Spain or England chased him and neither did Bayern, why?

    • Yaxin mullah ali says:

This true n its wat m tryna convince othrz gud point

  • Bidika Kitila says:

yeah, lfc can easly bid these players with averegly rated price before others enters into competion. But they interested to collect the ignored players that not at tracted by others. lf we can’t keep SUAREZ & if we un able to bring highly qualified players to Anfied, Is it possible for us to raise about top four? It is just like dream in mid day or Nightsmare. The owner has no devotion of foot ball. The managers
& others have no ambition about the club. Coz the not work to hold talented players by convincing. Rather they satisfied with fan’s angry &discomfort.
