Are principles more important than the player?

LFC trainingA very interesting point was made in one of the previous articles on live4liverpool.com regarding the vice captaincy.

Daniel Agger makes the world of sense as a choice for deputising for Steven Gerrard.

In terms of experience in a Reds shirt or just the natural pecking order at the club, it makes him and Jose Reina as the obvious choices. No one has really been at the club longer than those two after the captain and Jamie Carragher.

Reina’s already a bit of a boss from the backline with his shouting and organising of the defence, while Agger would be further involved in play, as well as the fact that he goes forward a lot would make him ideal to serve as a communication channel on the pitch.

But handing that honour to Luis Suarez, as has been suggested, would possibly be a good move. From one perspective it would seem like pandering to someone because of their quality as a player, which is undoubted, but pandering nevertheless if it transpires in to him being made the vice-captain just because of that.

On the other hand, he is an extremely valuable player to the side who is very much required not just to stay at Anfield but continue performing at the very top level he did all of last season. But he is perhaps a bit disenfranchised at the moment, albeit for more his own behaviour than anything else.

In this scenario, if getting him emotionally attached to the club is what will give him that sense of belonging again, then it couldn’t hurt.

Plus he would be able to compliment his status with the performances on the pitch as well. But what about his behaviour though? If that isn’t curtailed, it could also be more embarrassing for the club again.

Right now he’s just the star player. Stars have a tendency towards diva-like conduct but a club vice captain will be expected to show more maturity, which Carragher did throughout his time, and what Danny Agger would be as well going by his record so far.

But Suarez will be one of those (again, going by past precedence) up there complaining about something and even playing the victim on the pitch.

This doesn’t happen all the time, but it has happened enough, in addition to the instances of unprovoked bites and what not.

It would be fabulous if he remains at the club and keeps performing the way he did last season. If he’s doing that as a vice captain then great.

But would that be a step too far on the club’s part, to hand him the position just so he stays back? It may be the club treating an individual beyond everyone else, which isn’t something the club should be built on.

Even taking the captaincy from Sami Hyypia to give it to Steven Gerrard was a bit out of line, just because he was a local lad, who would be motivated more.

A pecking order and a hierarchy needs to be honoured and the only reason making Gerrard captain didn’t backfire, also had something to do with Hyypia’s professionalism to carry on.

It’s unlikely Agger or Reina will be too bothered if Suarez is chosen ahead of them. But it sets that precedence once again.

It might be a clever move, but perhaps there’s also a possibility of it still not being right in principle.
