Brendan’s Big Gamble

Liverpool FC keeper managerSADLY, Pepe Reina will not be playing no further part in the future of Liverpool FC as he is no longer considered to be in Brendan Rodgers long term plans since Simon Mignolet’s arrival.

He is being shipped out on loan to Rafa Benítez’s Napoli to save on his £110,000 salary.

If it is for financial reasons how can the club justify Downing’s £80k week wages? Never mind the fact that Jamie Carragher sat on the bench while earning his bumper weekly wage until he played the latter part of the season. Discussions for another day

Of course Reina may have left the club to join Barcelona but could you have blamed him wanting him to go back to his hometown club only for the move not to materialize due to Victor Valdes staying for one more year?

Neil Harris of the Liverpool Echo summed it up it up perfectly; Why, for example, is Reina now considered inferior to a player with little more than two seasons of top-level experience under his belt?

For me why did Brendan say when he signed the Belgian international he would be healthy competition for Reina, then say days later Mignolet is my number one keeper. Just be honest for once please, Brendan.

Did Brendan forget that during Pepe’s time with the club he won the Golden Glove award in three consecutive seasons? Then in the nine remaining league fixtures of last season Reina kept 6 clean sheets? The 4-0 win at Wigan could have been a different story if Pepe had not made the three world class saves during the course of the game.

I know for a fact that Pepe would not have given up the fight to keep his number 1 status had he been allowed to add to his 395 appearances.

One thing is certain: ‘Jose Manuel Reina is one of the best goalkeepers on the planet’. (The quote is taken from his profile on the Official Liverpool Football Club website) and a winner not only with LFC but also with Spain – two European Championships and a World Cup.

Pepe was the ultimate professional. He wore the Liverpool shirt with passion and pride and him and his family where proud to be in Liverpool and now have many friends in the city – me included.

How can we forget his magnificent penalty saves against West Ham which won the FA Cup in 2006 and against Chelsea in 2007 which helped the Reds reach the Champions League final in Athens. Even when he ran down to the Kop to celebrate when we beat Manchester United.

There have been many more that will live long in the memory in the history of this Football Club and also the fans that chanted his name and waved his flag aloft on the Kop.

Loaning Reina could end up being a big mistake and could define Brendan Rodgers’ own career with the club. It will be interesting to see if Mignolet can live up to the pressure to being LFC’s number one keeper as the expectations are higher than in the North East with Sunderland. Definitely Reina moving to pastures new leaves big gloves to fill and will be greatly missed by the fans.

Thanks Pepe for the memories it has been a pleasure Anfield will not be the same again. I know you will be a hit being reunited with former boss Rafa and show us fans what we will be missing. YNWA!

SADLY, Pepe Reina will not be playing no further part in the future of Liverpool FC

    WTF? I’m confused????

  • myleftball says:

Reina has been brilliant for us.. but he clearly wanted to go to Barcelona and had informed Liverpool that he wished to leave if an offer came in for him. It would have been foolish for Rodgers to not make alternative plans, he signed Mignolet and now he’s got a top class goalie. Thus Renia can pursue his plans to leave the football club…

  • Bill says:

He’s only gone on loan and if Mignolet fails as I suspect he will then he’ll be back next season.

  • Fergal Roche says:

Here here .Thanks for the great memories.

  • roythered says:

Totally agree, it’s something liverpool fans have had to put up with i’m afraid. Personally i don’t believe a word that comes out of Rodgers mouth, as constantly contradicts himself. Now Suarez is not for sale, more importantly the club it self is not up for sale, load of bull, firstly it’s trying to keep the fans on board (with Suarez) and secondly FSG are trying not to spook the market . Probably both will happen, unless they sell up to football people, then Suarez may stay.

  • rohit says:

if reina performs well….we can get more value for him next season

  • Firoz Hirji says:

I tend to agree that we will be nostalgic and miss Pepe. At his best days he was unequalled.Pepe was also very loyal and dedicated servant to LFC and for that we profoundly thank and thank him.

To some extent Pepe engineered his move away from Liverpool and has himself to blame. If things had worked according to plan he would have forced. a move to Spain and thats an open secret. I think Brendan out smarted him in this regard. As good a goal-keeper he is Reina made many silly mistakes in the last two seasons which cost us some matches. So maybe it was time to get a younger replacement and if this doesnt workout we can still get Pepe back after next season.

  • Tommy says:

Huge loss for Liverpool. He was not just a top goalie but a great character and leader too

This is another downgrade foe Liverpool just to save the yanks some more money

  • kez says:

    big mistake indeed!

  • Peter mendy says:

How do u forget the points he cost us e.g against city.

    • Kastro says:

Nice one man! Remind them…reina was very loyal to the club but had too much errors.

  • samson says:

A great mistake from BR for loan him out,i believe that he didn’t have intrest in him dat is why he look for another option.

  • Johnny says:

He was intent on going to Barca, LFC was not a priority for him anymore. That plan backfired on him, so a good move to get him off the wage bill. He has been atrocious in many games over the last 2 seasons, IMO he degraded rapidly, maybe a new challenge can help him regain his form. He was excellent for 3/4 years, but players cannot be selected on sentiment alone, he lost his edge. Best of luck to him. YNWA

    • Dan says:

Spot on johnny the rest of the so called supporters just want to pick on BR no matter what he does, if he hadn’t of got a goalie they would be moaning about it right now that he should have known and got a replacement, the fact that he now has he may have thought he could keep them both but no way would either sit on the bench with the World Cup coming up

    • mctunzzy says:

Johnny nailed it……Exactly what I had going on in my mind. Reina won’t be with Lfc forever, his love for Barca means he will leave 2014 and that means Lfc would have to be searching for a new goalie then…..so,let’s get a permanent one now in person of Mignolet and wish them both good luck.

  • patrick idrifua says:

He would have been around for sure coz he is one of the experienced players we need in the team

  • Carl says:

Don’t write on subjects you have not done your research on,
Johnny knows more than you do!

    • Kate says:

I have done my research thank you very much I also know that reina didn’t know he was going to Napoli only after getting a call off Rafa telling him he was up for loan by the club.

  • ray says:

He was due to leave I 2014 for Barca – so good move Bren – now do us all a favour – SORT OUT SUAREZ BY TUESDAY NEXT WEEK

  • stanley says:

johnny, u ar on point….reina shud go, he commits big errows for last two…three season dat cost us much, he can’t witstand preasure again, simon mognolet u ar highly welcome ,,,,up liver ..

  • John Smith says:

” I know for a fact that Pepe would not have given up the fight to keep his number 1 status had he been allowed to add to his 395 appearances.”

    Really? You have insider information?

On topic – things change, players and clubs move on. Reina is a great player and was a wonderful servant of the club. He needs a new challenge and will join Barca in 2014. Buying and settling a new goalkeeper makes sense in light of his imminent departure

    • Ozred says:

Yea, had a laugh at that point too. I know for a fact… What a laugh. Rains wanted to go to barca, we did the right thing by signing the best available at that price before missing the boat.

As it is at the end of last seasom, Raina not in top 7 – 8 keepers in pl. basic errors cost us several points. Mignolet will make us better this year. That’s all that matters

  • Maximo says:

I’ll miss Reina but its time to begin new chapter, wakeup lfc fans player come and go. Am waiting eagerly about LS too, sell him very soon and buy replacement. Lfc will go on.

  • Kings says:

If not for his wages, loaning him out now that he has mignolt to compete wt is not d best. He is not d only person guilty of some poorly coceeded goals. Our D-midfield need to be worked on if we re not expecting a repeat with mignolt.

  • juan says:

Like immoral chelsea fans who didnt have trust on their manager(rafa bentez) bt later they ended up calling him MASTER RAFA and being ashamed of their childish n stupid behaviour( but bcoz they do depend on their russian billionare)… So LFC FANS TRUST YOUR MANAGER(FOR THOSE WHO DONT TRUST BR) Dont be like stupid chelsea fanz.

    • Gary S. says:

Dumb comment. Rafa is a 10 times major trophy winner and widely respected.
Rogers is a second rate nobody who has won nothing

Rogers has proved himself useless and not to be trusted
