Summer Heatwave: Positive omen or happy coincidence?

Liverpool sunshineTHE good old BBC reported the UK was currently in its first prolonged heatwave since 2006, with temperatures above 30C (86F) recorded somewhere in the country on each of the last six days.

This is still some way short of the heatwave of 1976, when temperatures above 32C (89.6) were recorded on 15 days in a row.

In between ’76 and 2006 we had the heatwave in 2003 which got me thinking if this balmy welcome weather could possibly portend a successful season for the Reds or is any connection established simply hot air?

Well interestingly enough in 2003, 2006 and also 1976 we ended the season with silverware firmly tucked away in the Anfield trophy cabinet.

In 2003 Stevie G inspired the Redmen to a particularly pleasing League Cup win against Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium.

2006 was the year we successfully won both the FA Cup and Charity Shield. The Gerrard Final against West Ham in Cardiff will live long in the memory and is unquestionably one of the greatest finals in Cup history; not just for his two goals and assist in the 3-3 rollercoaster, Man-of the-Match Stevie led by example that day and pulled us triumphantly through the dramatic events that unfolded.

And finally in 1976 we completed a League and UEFA Cup double, with the Charity Shield thrown in for good measure.

Now I’m not one to go out in search of connections in every nook or cranny. You’ll not catch me star gazing in a bid to come up with a winning line for next weeks’ Euro Millions. But neither am I blind to evidence when it’s staring at me slap bang in the face. It’s hard to logically conclude an average increase in temperatures over a prolonged period can lead to improved performances and greater successes among a group of well-honed professional athletes.

Yet for some reason I find it difficult to completely dismiss altogether. If you look over the years at the theories proposed to improve team performances (the infamous Glenn Hoddle/Eileen Drewery saga springs to mind!) making a connection between atmospheric activities and team success may not be as out there as initially thought.

I’ll let you decide for yourself if the preceding heatwave points to our future success. For me though with the new season around the corner the evidence is overwhelming!

I thought winning silverware is based on the skills of the players and the experience of the manager and of course the referee .
