Incoming Ilori as Reds open transfer negotiations

Liverpool targetThe Express reports that Liverpool have stepped up their interest in a £6 million deal for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Tiago Ilori.

Reds’ boss Brendan Rodgers has been keeping a close eye on the Portugal U-20s international all summer, and believes that Ilori could be the key to rectifying his defensive problems following injuries to Sebastian Coates and, most recently, Kolo Toure, whose injury has come just days before Liverpool’s clash with Manchester United.

Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel is expected to make a return to the team for Sunday’s match, but this only leaves Daniel Agger and Andre Wisdom for defensive cover.

The 20 year old Ilori broke into Lisbon’s first team last season and impressed in his debut season despite the Portuguese outfit’s poor showing throughout, however he has not featured in a game this season.

Liverpool made an offer of around £3 million earlier in the transfer window, though Liverpool’s desperate need to bolster their defences mean it is likely they will adhere to Lisbon’s asking price of £6 million.

Portuguese media outlet, O Jogo, has reported that Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal after Lisbon’s chief executive, Bruno de Carvalho, granted the Reds permission to open negotiations with Ilori.

Ilori had initially been negotiating with Lisbon over a new deal but, now that they have broken down, the club seem to have resigned to his departure.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

Well he sounds like a promising young lad jus hope lfc can meet the asking price and dnt end up broke relly hope they can afford him cause we need him and other players the more we have in defence the more competion there will be for places and isn’t tht wat rogerts wants.

  • Bash says:

FSG have not spent a penny!!
Constant lies about how there is big money available for new signings..yet so many players sold..and still no depth to squad.. Makes u think any purchases were solely dependent on sale of Suarez!!
Willian.. Mkhitaryan & Costa were merely smokescreens to keep all of us fans onside!
Otherwise why dither when players like Eriksen, Ljajic, Sakho, Alderweireld, Llori, Coentrao, Honda and many more are available at less than half their true worth!!
Southampon.. Spurs.. West Ham.. Norwich etc have all gone about their business without dithering!
Wage bill has been culled.. More TV revenue than ever before.. £20m a year from Standard Chartered.. £25m from Warrior.. Money from Garuda airlines.. Jack Wolfskin.. Chevrolet etc- Makes you wonder where it is all going!!!
All those talkin bout not paying over the odds.. Well just look at those mentioned above, without doubt their values would be much higher if they were not on last year of their contract…. Even Christian Atsu (who we were linked with) going to Chelsea for £3.5m!!!
Buck Rodgers himself said our early signings were for squad depth and we were looking now for “Quality” for first team but with just over 80 hours to go there is no one!!
We were told Mignolet was competition for Reina..then Reina is loaned to Napoli…
Realistically squad is showing too much weakness after 2 games..Against Utd No cover for Enrique, Nor for Agger or Skrtel (who are both less than 100% fit).. No experienced cover for Johnson..nor for Gerrard/Lucas/Henderson and only inexperienced cover for Aspas/Sturrdge/Coutinho in Alberto/Ibe/Sterling and a rubbish Borini… I have loved LFC all my life..best night of my life was in Istanbul 2005 but have to be a realist and concerned because those in charge are pulling the wool over our eyes BIG TIME!! Success WILL NOT come on a shoestring as proven by Utd.. City.. Chelsea and now Spurs. Even Wenger has found out since the “halycon” days of Henry,Pires,Bergkamp,Wiltord,Viera,Llundberg etc etc.

      they (fsg)are killing KFC

    • Red2theBone says:

Im with you on that one Bash. This might be one of the last transfer windows where you can really splash the cash before Fifa ffp kicks in, Im startin to think that our owners just wants to generate money from our club and yes we will only spent big if a sale for Suarez where to go through but thats a little late in the now. I just hope we land Yarmolenko and Ilori or Sakho and keep Suarez the owners should be able to spend that amount of money

    • kevinf7 says:

Don’t agree. The problem is that players especially the top ones such Costa, mhkytarain don’t find LFC as attractive as we used to be. Fsg actually have been really shrewd in their dealings. For example is Willian actually worth 30 mil? He only has 2 caps for Brazil. I think we got rid of a lot of dead wood so far that would not get us anywhere. I think we are adding quality not quantity.its a matter of identifying the right players and then trying to bring then in and paying sensible prices

    • Bones says:

Bash I couldn’t have put it better myself, I totally agree, these Yanks won’t splash the cash. We jump from 30 mil for Willian to a loan of Victor Moses. Spurs seem to getting all their business done without the attraction of the C.L.
Honestly just want this transfer window to shut, it’s been a long summer and I’ve had just about enough BULL Sh%t as 1 fan can take, FSG your having a laugh.

    • fseq says:

Sturridge and Coutinho in January? They are now integral parts of our first 11, but perhaps your memory only runs as far as the current window? Holding on to Suarez despite an perhaps even more infected situation than Bale’s, getting the experience of Kolo on a free, loan of Aly, Aspas proving to be very useful. And, mind you, Liverpool is no way near as attractive as one that plays in European competitions. We could do a Southampton and purchase big names, but at silly wages. It feels like some of you lot won’t do with anything other than Sheik-style spending. Who’s the greedy one?

      • Bones says:

Is it greedy to want the team you’ve supported as a boy sit back among the top tier teams is it?

We all understand that it takes time but the longer we keep losing players after player to spurs then the harder it gets to make that top 4

Even if Suarze stays he’s as good as gone, we need to fill that void we can’t keep relying on youngsters. SG ain’t gonna be about much longer either.

But I’m glad the team is moving in the right direction has got a bit of fight this season compared to last. I trust BR but fell FSG are not willing to spend big.

    • allaboutanfield says:

      Well said and totally agree.

    • stevieG says:

      Excellent comment bash

  • Marc says:

Dry your eyes , the world is Changing around us. Fsg are part of a new ownership style. In a couple of years the massive spending of all the clubs you mention will be banned. Wages over a certain amount will be banned. People are staving to death while Rooney earns 250 000 pounds per week. That’s enough money to feed 100 000 per day.

Capatlism as we know it, is changing. I don’t know what the future holds, but it will never be like it is now.

    YNWA.

Good lucks you reds for Sundays match. Come on 3 from 3 , top of the log here we come.

    • Ebrahim says:

Great comment Marc, i bet nobody looked at it in that way, repsect to you for that comment.

    • stevie says:

well said marc. as someone who is sick to death of the greed in modern football i think fsg are thinking along the right lines. hopefully other clubs will follow. why do clubs spend 100m (or thereabouts) to get in the champions league just to win 25m, which i believe is what citeh earned from cl last season? that makes no economic sense. i dare say fsg have looked at this and don’t want to get completely involved in the madness that is the modern game

    • stevieG says:

Naive and stupid comment marc . Stick to the dreaming

  • tony says:

FSG DO NOT GIVE ONE *WHAT WE THE SUPPORTERS THINK.
Stop asking Questions They don’t care about fans where the team is on ladder just that we are middle table fine buy them.
We can all cry we can all say what we think on social media they don’t listen .
To us the fans LFC is life its what we eat *sleep drink LFC.
To them is PROFIT for there pockets we live of sponsors dollars .
Players are linked to us they are never coming to us or never will.
Stevie gerrard in my life what a players for LFC and he is near the end and we are not trying to win premier league for him ?????
We are not going for champions league .
These Guys are the WORST WHY CAUSE THEY JUST DONT GIVE A F%$K ABOUT ME AND YOU ITS THERE POCKET.

  • NigerianKOP Onyedika says:

Bash, u’ve said it all. Why is FSG Turning us to laughing stocks. They must go. We need new owners.. If they cant bring in quality, then *dem all

  • vicky says:

@ Bash don’t mind LFC management, they are shadows in the mirror.. I wonder how top 4 could be achieved without quality players..

  • Wolex says:

My kopity wat are we expecting from American capitalist, pple who seldomly spend Money but sweftly make profit, fsg miximise profit and any profit miximiser are highly exploitative that is wat the America owner are,we shouldn’t blame BR for nt buying quality player, can one purchase materials witout Money very impossible so fsg should consider fans and stop d act of hunting without shooting,

  • Tony says:

Stop paying attention to the gutter press.
Have some faith, scatter-shot purchasing is not the way to build for future.
    Teams are built, not purchased.
With all the money spent what have Man City truly achieved?
Chelsea have spent even more and have at least achieved one CL, but they rebuild every year, nothing enduring.

Man Utd spend wisely but also use many young players.

LFC were damn near receivership just a couple of years ago. Now? they are close.
I’m old enough to remember Shankly era onward.
Have patience, FSG and Rodgers are rebuilding a dynasty. It doesn’t happen overnight

    YNWA

    • stevieG says:

What a dumb comment . Go and look see how many trophies chelski and city have won

….and Man u ? They have always spent fortunes

      Get a grip kid

  • Ross says:

Well said Marc, one must look at the bigger picture. The dais of silly spending are coming to an end. The likes of money bags Chelsea and City have even reeled it in somewhat. FFP will change the face of football add we know it and is already starting to. Things will change for the better I’m sure, we just have to be a little patient.

I’m sure we have moment to spend, and just need to be more careful than ever about what we spend it on. It’s different for spurs as they happen to have sold their biggest asset however, they also need to spend very wisely.

I know on the face of it, it doesn’t look great, but believe me, cutting the wage bill is absolutely essential in order to ensure we’re prepared for the full force of FFP. And make no mistake, there will be no circumventing the FFP rules.

  • Prince says:

Pls fellow kopites, let’s wait til mid-season and see how far our team goes and what BR and FSG hav in mind. D big names of today were once average players. Lets giv our team time to mature. These are young lads who hav d zeal to win matches and bcom big names in football. Bt d urgent point of call now is our defence crisis. We nid to bolster it b4 d man utd clash. YNWA…

Why try to negotiate if the price is low? I dont understand why was it Eriksen’s price was nearly £17m when LFC enquired about him but came down to £12m for Spurs?
