Reds lose yet another target

Wilian BrazilTHE Liverpool Echo reports how Liverpool’s frustration at losing out on big signings this summer has increased yet again – after they seem to have lost out on Anzhi Makhachkala winger Willian to Spurs, who will sign him in a £30 million deal.

The Reds were hoping to procure the services of the Brazilian, after Anzhi revealed they were planning to cut their playing budget by 60% this summer and even had initial conversations with the Russian outfit regarding the 25 year old.

Liverpool were willing to pay big money to bring Willian to Anfield but Spurs’ interest looks to have scuppered the Reds’ hopes.

Andre Villas-Boas has long been an admirer of Willian, even since his stint at Chelsea. That interest and the fact that Spurs can offer Champions League football this season gives them the edge over Liverpool. Willian flew into London on Tuesday for a medical and discuss personal terms.

Whilst Spurs have splashed out this summer, Liverpool’s transfer spree this season has been a endless series of disappointments, as moves for big names such as Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar Donetsk and Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid have failed, despite initial optimism for the move from both sides.

Mkhitaryan instead opted to move to Borussia Dortmund and Costa managed to thrash out a new deal at Madrid.

Hey all, I'm 17 years old and I've only been writing sports articles for a couple of months. I'm an aspiring journalist living in the Anfield area (about 5 minutes from the stadium, seriously, I can hear the roar of the Kop from my house!) I've been a lifelong supporter along with my entire family (except one Uncle, but we don't need to talk about that) and I've followed the Reds through the good and the bad times - and there's been a lot of both. I recently got accepted into college and shall be taking a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Journalism, with this hopefully being the first step towards a full time career in journalism.

So instead of the closing tge deal and spending some real money we have signed cissoko.

Excellent another loan signing to help us catch up with Spurs who have spent 80 million. Spurs finished 11 points ahead of us last year. Arsenal 12. So in order to get to 4th we need to close a 12 point gap and hope the other teams do not improve. I see us getting closer to Arsenal than Spurs. Will we finish above Spurs? Not a chance. Will we finish above Arsenal, maybe but do not discount them. So is anybody happy with FSG turning in a PROFIT during this window? By the way stadium planning permission due in spring then due before the season started has obviously been missed. Still happy with FSG?

Some of you are happy with Coutinho and Sturridge and rightly so but to hit 4th spot we need something extra. It isn’t going to come this window and I think most of us know it.

How are Spurs going to offer Will.i.an Champions League football this season? Are they going to loan him out to L’Arse.

  • john t says:

How can Spurs offer Champions League footy when they finished 5th last season?

  • Lightning Smith says:

Bit of a typo there my friends. I wish Spurs could offer Champion league football this season. Pity it’s just Europa

  • Jas says:

I think he means what was known as the UEFA Cup.

  • screw face says:

what does it matter what we offer him. he is now a Tottenham player. take it like a man you bitter little scousers. hahahahahahahaha

Ahh a keyboard commando. Does your Step-mum know your still up?

    • MAD-KOPITE says:

It really doesn’t matter who you get in or how much you pay them, you’ll have the “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” tag when you win f**k all !! And when I feel bitter or disappointed, I just book a trip down the road to our FAMOUS ground and peruse the TROPHY ROOM !! I take it you DO have one of them ??

  • screw face says:

Tottenham are gonna win the league this seaon.

  • screw face says:

everton are much better than Liverpool now, they have the best English player too in ross barkley, what a player.

  • Feenix says:

Liverpool never had a chance of getting Willian. Not because Spurs are a bigger club or even a better team the fact is Willian and AVB are pretty close and talk on the phone all the time so I don’t think you had much chance when Spurs got involved as he was always going to join Spurs.

    • Nickyboy says:

Spuds are not a bigger club to be one of them u need to win things call trophys something spuds never do that’s why there the third biggest club in London bec they simply a selling club with a small *stadium in a shocking area of islington the problem with spurs supporters is so many of them suffer with * witch makes them believe there something there not the fact is your one and only world class player wants to leave bec even he knows that he isn’t going to win anything staying we’re he is just look at what you have won before judging others that’s been there and won that!!

I think that the player probably feels as if he has a better chance of success with Spurs, too!
There is NO hiding the fact that Spurs have COMFORTABLY finished above Liverpool in recent seasons, and like Sigurdsson and Dempsey before him, Willian probably saw Spurs as a better option.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Liverpool as a club and think BR will do a great job there, given time. But lets not kid ourselves and pretend that the ONLY reason the Brazilian has chosen Spurs over Liverpool because of his relationship with the coach. AVB has tried to sign him TWICE before and failed!

As things stand Spurs have moved ahead of Liverpool, and players, both domestically and abroad, know that.

  • Jim says:

Have FSG spent ANY money from their own pockets this transfer window? They are tighter than a ducks ass. Liverpool will go nowhere with FSG owning the club. They are skimming massive profits from LFC and refusing to invest in good quality players to help us get back in the Champions League. FSG are wolves in Armani suits and the amount of LFC fans who can’t see it happening right before their eyes is shocking.

  • john says:

A lot of what’s going on is to do with Liverpool having Comolli and Spurs having Baldini. AVB wanted Baldini last year but it wasn’t an option. AVB tried and missed big signings last year. Since Baldini arrived we have bought well and quickly. Not a usual trait you relate to Spurs. When we had Comolli we had mixed dealings some ok. The odd good one but mostly a lot of average stuff. Sound familiar to you pool fans? Not a dig but I’m not a fan of BR.

Liverpool are not serious in the market,a player we ealier enter talk with and he also admited he will be hapy to play in a big club like Liverpoolfc bcos of our unseriousness, the done deal for Spurs.

  • mieReds says:

    F**k Spurs..always following us..f**k u AVB

    • NZ Red says:

Can’t you REaD…. AVB wanted him when he was at Chelsea, long before we even knew he existed. Learn to read. If we were ever really keen on him then we should still be in a bidding war! So get over it

    • Spursmad Dave says:

Now now whats up have we beaten you again to a player.

  • adheer says:

Spurs are NOT in the Champions League!!!

  • kop blaize says:

am seriously tired of this *…..who’ll we put the blame on now,is it HENRY or RODGERS????

  • ray says:

I’ll take it you meant spuds can offer him Europa league football and not champions league football as they’re not in it. Jesus try and at least get the basics right if you want to work as a sports writer.

  • Kilasho says:

BR is a disgrace. Wanna apply a buy nd sell transfer policy. Liverpool aren’t gonna make top four even top six. *
