Talk of ‘Love & Loyalty’ rings hollow from the mouth of Suarez

LiverpoolSO the Guardian and the Telegraph are both reporting that Luis Suarez will be handing in his transfer request by the end of the week.

Citing his total effort for the club, “I gave absolutely everything last season but it was not enough to give us a top-four finish,” he reminds us of his hard work and dedication over the past two years.

In a further quote, “…now all I want is for Liverpool to honour our agreement,” he maintains that Liverpool owe him an opportunity to play for a Champions League team and that they have both a contractual and spoken agreement to that effect. Bollocks.

What part of “Oops. I cost Liverpool 20 games in suspension” got lost in the translation? How does doing stupid things that hurt the club, constitute giving “absolutely everything”?

The thing that bothers me about Luis is not the fact that he wants so desperately to play in the Champions League for Arsenal, but that he has shown us that he is not a man of enduring character.

All of his protestations of loyalty and love for the fans rings hollow in the light of his recent actions. I think we would forgive his misleading statements, were he not determined to join our rivals in frustrating OUR bid for a Champions league place.

I’ve bought the story that his supposed racial slur was a tempest in a teapot, a cultural misunderstanding and a cynical ploy by Alex Ferguson to hamstring us by eliminating our best player. It rings too true not to provide some considerable doubt as to his guilt in that situation. The biting is less easy to explain away. Although his suspension for this senseless transgression was much too long, the fact remains that he did something totally beyond the pale and that he had done it before.

This is not a player whose South American high spirits got the better of him, but a cynical opportunist who ignores consequences in the blur of ego and self aggrandizement that excuses him from the punishments written for lesser men.

How about “the English press have made it impossible for me to stay in England” (or words to that effect)? The last time I looked, Arsenal was based in London and London (unfortunately) is part of England. Unless Arsenal relocates to Antarctica, Suarez’ indiscretions and past history will not suddenly be wiped clean nor will Fleet Street name him Man of the Year.
[ad_pod id=”unruly-video” align=”center”]
For months we heard that Luis had been badgered so mercilessly that he had to leave for Real Madrid. The press was invading his private life and ruining football (and life itself) for Suarez and his wife and daughter. Nothing could be contemplated but flight to the mainland and its benign core of friendly reporters and benevolent editors.

There is no question that Luis Suarez cannot be sold to ANY club in England with pretensions to the top four. The man is supremely talented and will augment the attack and the aura of any club he plays for. Like all great players, he elevates his teammates to perform at a higher level and he generates value for the club both off and on the pitch. Given this, I would sell him at a discount to a mainland club just to keep him out of the clubs in the BPL where he could come back to cost us more than the few million pounds we would have to forgo.

What does Brendan Rodgers do now? He has a valuable asset that could see Liverpool knocking at the door of the Champions League as well as domestic competitions. He has a player who has shown himself to be world class, a player who could win the Premiership scoring title if he stays on the pitch. He is a player who works harder than most to achieve his dreams and is a constant threat with his talent and inventive play.

But ultimately, he is a player who doesn’t want to stay. Does Brendan pull out all the stops to keep a player who feels himself a captive or does he jeopardize the team’s chance to move up the table?   If this team, this ownership, wants to reoccupy its rightful place, it has to move beyond Suarez; it has to loosen the purse strings and make such a splash on the transfer market that everyone takes notice.

Liverpool fans need to wake up and realise it is their club and manager lying not Suarez. None of us like the tabloids, points to Michael Owen going to the Sun. Liverpool need to rebuild not go on a witch hunt. He’s not a good role model, but then how many of us really are? Look to the future and let Luis go, obviously if it turns out he lied in his interview then he should be run out of town. But Liverpool are offering nothing on this? It seems that a clause exists so it must have been talked about at some level? What do you think?

    • guest says:

I would have to agree, really expected a statement last night from the manager before the friendly in Norway, but ” no comment”, Brendan’s track record for telling porky’s is well noted as well, as regards previous promises to fans about transfers and players staying/going. If the club knew about this clause, and have left it as late as this to actually tackle the situation, then I am afraid for future deals as we have made ourselves look very amateurish………again.

  • Xabi says:

Lewandawski will be a statement. He can be convinced. And Dortmund will throw in thank us for taking him off their hands and not giving him to Bayern

    • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

lewandowski?…..hahahahah….. deluded?…… man u couldnt convince him…… already has a contract with bayern.

  • Dj says:

Very good article. Take the money flog him to a club on the continent and get him out of the club.

Shut the door on your way out Luis!

  • Sibusiso says:

Ship this guy out of England even if we get 20mil than 45mil from a team with same CL aspirations like us.

  • ray says:

Arsenal don’t buy big players they sell them

  • mick says:

porto or shaktar. Any russians made an offer yet.

  • papers says:

What will happen if he remains at the club after the transfer window shuts? Will he be professional and play his utmost or will he do a Tevez and sulkily refuse to play? Should Suarez leave and join Arsenal he will become more reviled than Torres ever was.

  • stevie says:

Please just get rid of him. Preferably abroad but real madrid have just signed up ronaldo on a new deal and the bale deal will happen. So it looks like arsenal. He’ll probably be suspended half the season anyway so he won’t be much use to them! I would go for defoe and bent as replacements but I’m not the manager. Probably overpay for some foreigner with a fancy name though

    • Erin says:

Agree with letting him go, but on our terms. Simple. Arsenal will laugh at us when they sell him next season for 60 million. How about 40 million plus a 40% cut on his next transfer???

  • Marshall says:

He needs to hand in a transfer request first even if he wants premier league help.his gone to the media coz he wants the cash cushion which lfc arent willin to extend to him.l think this is all luis attempt to cashin, lfc should insist on transfer request 55mill and rigid time otherwise let him play with the juniors this is a world cup year we dnt lessen our chances.the spoilt brat needs a lesson in manners

    • Oddbod says:

Liverpool can’t afford to let him sweat with the kids. The reality is that it is painful but you’ve got to let him come to the arse for what we have offered. No one else wants him and we ain’t gonna give you anymore than we’ve bid. We could stretch to and extra £1 at a push

  • Oddbod says:

Fans, clubs and players know nothing about loyalty but that doesn’t stop everyone banding the word about.

1.. Fans show the least amount of loyalty to their player and club. It doesn’t take them long to turn of their club or players when things don’t go their way

    2. Clubs are quick to drop a player if they lose form. Some even dishonouring their verbal promises to a player in order to keep them.

    3. Players will leave a club they profess to love quicker than strawberry turns if a bigger club or bigger wages are on offer

Liverpool fans. This is the way of the world. Arsenal learned that the hard way in the past few years. Stop *whingeing and whining about how disloyal suarez is and get used to life without Suarez. Your club need to face reality, grab the money on offer and go buy a replacement as soon as possible.

Suarez – a warm and enthusiastic welcome awaits you at the Ems

  • Geo says:

I think most folks would agree suarez needs to be “flogged”, sounds like a good idea to me

  • Erin says:

Transfer request? Over rated . The club does not have to sell for below market value. It is that simple. The boss needs to sit down with him. Give him a list of British media outlets… And tell him “you can talk as much as you want . We will I only sell when it the bid reaches 55 million. Not £1 less. Comprende???? F@ching ignorant…

All he needed to do was train hard. Wear a smile, and the clubs will have bid for him much higher than the pittance arsenal are offering.

What pisses me off is that if he leaves for 40 million, arsenal will make a 15-20 million profit within 18 months from him and guarantee CL football. Plus laugh at our faces. The French frog knows that and he is playing us.

So, time for the directors to make a stand and play hardball. Look at DeLaurentis at Napoli. His message to Cavani, ”there is nothing to talk to you about untill 55 million offer I made. ” that’s how he reacted to Cavani’s talk request. Time for our board to grow a pair and do the same thing. So, give him the leaflets, the shirt with “free Suarez” and tell him, * off and talk to whoever you want. YOU will go on our terms.

  • REDDY says:

Sell the traitor to Madid for Modric+35mil please! … Then sign Diego Costa-20mil and Erriksen-15mil. That should cover Suarez goals! Modric 10 goals, Erriksen 10 goals, Costa 18 goals.. Suarez scored 23 in the league. We would be better without him! Backstabbing Traitor!!! I never wanna see him in a LfC jersey again!

  • allaboutanfield says:

At this point in time , better to sell him off . No point to keep an ungrateful bitey . Bad for the club and the team .

  • Raam says:

Suarez is at the moment should feel very ashamed. Maybe he thought CL league clubs will que up for his signature after his performance last season. Astonishingly, only Arsenal came.,thats why he is desperate to go there. And Arsenal will suffer even worst than Liverpool if they failed to qualify for CL. Pere Guardiola may advice him to bite himself to get banned. Suarez is capable of anything!

  • vincent says:

Sad…but for a player to go to such extends to leave a club after so much supports is shown by the club & supporters for his behavior on the field…sigh! He is of no difference to a little spoilt brat…thru’ all means to get the things he wants. BR, let him go…., let him show his true nature at Arsenal, let wenger handle him with his wonderful quote, “I did not see”.

  • Marshall says:

The money is worthless if we are strengthern our enemy i stil suggest he plays withe the juniors.if uruguay want to take chances with him thats for them to take chances but as lfc let him play with the juniors he thogut a biddin war would erupt but only arsenal are bidding.

  • CHUKWUEMEKA says:

selling him is not a problem, we wld but at the right price.

    • Erin says:

40 million plus one, with a clause for a 40% sell on fee.. Should bring another 20 million from Madrid next year when he leaves arsenal

  • Greg says:

Suarez last January in an interview with the Daily Mail:

‘But I want to say now that, if you want to know what will happen to me if we don’t qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay.’

A very odd commitment from someone who supposedly already had an agreement to go if LFC didn’t make CL….and a very odd agreement to make at all as at the time LFC where in no position to challenge for CL and FSG openly stated they were not expecting top four. So, according to LS, he and BR made an agreement over something everyone knew wasn’t possible….and one which he himself is publicly contradicting just a few months later…. hmmm?!

  • Bobbykop says:

It’s ok for Rodgers to say Carroll not in his plans but when a 30 goals Suarez who is one of the best I’ve ever seen, says he wants to leave for CL football it’s not ok.
BR must understand this quality of player is worthy of CL football. BR is out his depth here.

    • guest says:

Agreed, some real hypocrisy coming from the club and fans over this suarez issue, Suarez has given us two and a half seasons and in my book has given 100% on the field, some fans need to reign it in and take their heads for a soaking.
