Benfica LFCLiverpool FC have been linked with a move for highly rated Serbian defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic reports the Liverpool Echo.

With the January transfer window approaching, the Reds have reportedly entered the race for the 25 year old Benfica player.

Matic, who had an ill-fated spell at Premier League rivals Chelsea, joined Benfica in 2009 as part of the deal that saw David Luiz move to Stamford bridge. It was during the same window that Chelsea also signed Fernando Torres from the Reds.

According to O Jogo, Brendan Rodgers has made Matic’s signing a priority in January as he seeks to strengthen his midfield.

Matic was named Portugal’s Primeira Liga Player of the Year for his performances last season, after winning the monthly award on three occasions.

However, Liverpool will face competition from Spanish giants Real Madrid who have also stepped up their interest in the cultured left footed midfield star.

At this point there have been no discussions regarding a fee nor have there been any indications that Benfica would want to sell Matic during the Winter transfer window.

Matic is believed to have a buy-out clause of £38million in his current deal so the Reds would need to offer an amount close to that figure to tempt Benfica into selling him.

    Too expensive for Liverpool.

  • Ezekiel K says:

Paying such amount for a player who failed to prove his worth in the EPL is a gamble.

  • tristin says:

    Maybe they will get him

  • Sumay says:

Matic is good if we can have him an he will never work alone.

    • aaron says:

Oh I’m not so sure he’ll never walk alone, some regular comment contributors on this site have already informed everyone else that in their opinion, Rodgers is well and truly, Walking Alone.

One bad performance from any new player and they are on their own, until we win something and some fans distancing themselves from their own opinions, cheering from the rooftops singing YNWA.

Support the team in success and times of trouble, as we are rebuilding the entire club, this support is needed more than ever.

Ridiculous amount of money. Avoid. On another theme……well done chris coleman for condeming harry wilson to a life of never playing in a major international football tournament. Playing him for the last two minutes of the game against belgium means a career of wasting his time playing for wales. I’m sure the lad would have wanted to develop his game more and then decide if england came calling. Selfish coleman

  • arn kedah says:

Just bring pastore he a great playmaker we want quality players

  • Denis D says:

I am hoping this is a joke, As B Rodgers should bring in these three central midfielders for the Ridiculous PRICE OF Matic:

And every single one of them is individually better than Matic:

1: CM: Koke(21) Of A Madrid for 16-18M to compete and cover Henderson
2: CM: Beñat Etxebarria(26) Of A Bilbao for 10-12M to compete and cover Allen
3: DM: M’Vila(23) Of Rubin Kazan for 8-10M to compete and cover Lucas

Etxebarria(26) and Koke(21) would cost club 30-32M but would help replace the class and quality of S Gerrard(33). As S Gerrard(33) has one more good year of top class football in him if he is rested sufficiently over this and next season. Koke(21) would compete with Henderson(23) for next 4 to 6 years and Etxebarria(26) would compete with Allen(23) for the next 2-4 years.

M’Vila(23) would compete with Lucas Leiva(26) for the next 2- 4 years.

If B Rodgers brings these three midfielders to club between January and summer transfer window: Then the clubs centre midfield will be solid mobile class creative and strong for the next few years: Allen, Etxebarria, Henderson, Koke, Lucas and M’Vila.

I thought we were going for will hughes? Man ure are in for koke anyway so he’ll probably go there

    • Denis D says:

Koke and Etxebarria are both better players than Wil Hughes, Man United are after Herrera.

We should bring in Koke, Etxebarria and M’Vila to club.

Why did let suso go on loan or sell shelvey to Swansea , if we are now going to go for wil hughes? As he does not look better than Suso or Shelvey and the championship is not in comparison with Premiership. Wil Hughes , is not better than Allen or Henderson.

And that is what is needed, better creative mobile goalscoring centre midfielders and a mobile strong tough tackling defensive midfielder at the club. for now and future of club

      • stevie says:

Denis……depends how patient you are. Do you want to see hughes develop into a top player or do you want off the shelf ready made players (which in my humble opinion sums up everything that is wrong with the english game)?

        • Denis D says:

Stevie, If that was going to be the case. we should have kept shelvey as in all honesty the club selling shelvey for 6m and we brought J Allen for 15m looks quite shocking and pathetic.

J Allen and Henderson are both descent players, but none of them are world beaters. And both of them are better than Hughes at moment

Our club does not have 5 more years to waste on trying to get back in champions league, if we are to get back in champions league it has to happen in the next two years.

And when we get back in champions league, i am hoping and praying we are a force to be reckoned with like we used to be in europe under benitez. Different football philosophy but if club have better classier players at club, then when we get back in Champions league.

We are not in it for the sake of it like Arsenal and Man City have been for last two years, when our club is back in champions league i hope we are in it to win it.

And in all honesty : the likes of Alonso, Carrick, Gerrard,Iniesta, Lampard, Xavi are coming to an end.

Whilst the likes of Barkley, Cazorla, Coutinho,Draxler, Eriksen, Gustavo,Herrera, Isco, Mata, Modric, Oscar, Ozil, Paulinho, Ramsey, Silva, Thiago and Wiltshire will start to flourish and take over.

how long do you think it willl take Wil Hughes, J Allen and J Henderson to get to the class and quality of most of the names above?

Koke(21) Of A Madrid is for now and future
B Etxebarria(26) Of A Bilbao is for now and next 3 years.

These two class creative offensive centre midfielders would replace Stevie Gerrard, as at moment J Allen and Henderson are not good enough for B Rodgers to even give S Gerrard a rest let alone replace him.

Koke(21) and Etxebarria(26) are both mobile, class, creative , offensive centre midfielders: Both are forward thinking and both offer more class, creativity than Allen and Henderson.

There is no point the club trying to bring wil Hughes to club when we let a a descent good player( J Shelvey 21) leave at the start of the season for peanuts.

We need to bring in better quality to club than Allen and Henderson and Wil Hughes is not better class or quality than either of them.

But Koke(21) And Benat(26) are both better individually than Allen and Henderson.

  • Kusiima Amon says:

Br should consider matic to pastore but a double deal can better since it adds competion in midfld

  • don says:

m villa is a good shout. mobile , tough tackling reminds me a bit of vierra, and if he is associated with imbula, that will be one of the best mid combination of the season…

  • Raam says:

Did LFC or BR announce anything about this fella Matic? With a rediculous price tag, all these nonsence as usual created by press..pure speculations.
