Hard to see now why anybody thought this would go any differently. Liverpool, backs to the wall, needing a win to progress; nothing else would do.
In campaigns past, the character of the players would see the side through but the current team appears devoid of all character and, thus, it was a predictably turgid first 75 minutes until the game looked truly lost. Then one or two of them turned up. Alas, again predictably, it was not enough and Liverpool will now face the Europa League.
