Carragher was firm in his belief that Gerrard should not have a place in Rodgers’ team

Following Liverpool’s tough, hard-fought 1-nil win against Swansea City on Monday night, there was much discussion as to where Liverpool went wrong, and what had to be done to improve against Man Utd on Sunday.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, former Liverpool defender and legend, Jamie Carragher said, when asked whether he would start Gerrard against Manchester United on Sunday: “No I wouldn’t.

“The team is playing well. They’re on a great run since Steven’s been out the team.

“Unfortunately, and he’ll know himself, when you go out the team and they continue on a great run it’s hard to get back in.

“It’s unfortunate for him but we’ve all been there towards the end of our careers. There are players playing too well that you can’t leave them out.”

With Liverpool having been in their best run since almost pipping Manchester City to the title last season, the pressure is on to take another ‘big’ scalp, whilst Man Utd will be looking to hold off one of their main rivals for the top-4.

However, with Brendan Rodgers having said following Monday’s match that he wants to see the team push for 2nd again, bringing Gerrard back into the team would surely be counter-productive at this stage, despite the first half on Monday night.

Check out what Jamie said in his full audio below:

Do you believe that Gerrard should return, or is Carragher right about having Gerrard on the bench for the big games ahead? Let us know your thoughts below.

Though I totally agree with Jamie, we shouldn’t forget this is the last season for Steven. And I guess that there won’t be anything better than this to offer him with a start rather than making him sir on the bench. Though it’s a crucial match and a deccessive one for the top four, he should be given a chance to play against our arch rivals.
