One such goalkeeper who could perhaps challenge rather than replace is Mathew Ryan.

The 23 year old Australian’s stats are fantastic in only conceding a goal a game – with the caveat being that he has only played in Australia and Belgium, so his need to prove himself at the highest level far exceeds Rui Patricio’s.

Regardless, he is the No.1 for the Australian national team, replacing his goalkeeping hero Mark Schwarzer, and impressed greatly at the Asian Cup this year, where his team won in extra time over South Korea.

Liverpool scouts apparently watched him during that tournament, where speculation had already mounted in January about a possible move. Since then, Ryan has admitted that he would love to prove his ability on the big stages of Europe’s elite leagues.

Club Brugge look set to win the Belgian league this season, after three years of dominance by Anderlecht, therefore perhaps this summer would be the right time for Ryan to seek a new challenge.

He would probably be quite cheap, at around £5m, but offers plenty of potential and far greater competition to Mignolet than Brad Jones.
