It didn’t move quite as quickly as we’d hoped, in the end, but Liverpool have finally announced the signing of Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.
The club had had the England international at the top of the summer transfer list for defensive reinforcements but had a fair bit of haggling to do with the South coast club before being able to bring the player in today for a fee believed to be in the region of £12.5 million.
Clyne was reportedly a prime target for Manchester United (as was Roberto Firmino) but the Reds continued the summer theme of getting the club’s business done early and ensuring they don’t miss out on any more targets, so Ayre and the club’s committee can give themselves a pat on the back for getting another transfer over the line.
The 24 year old will bring a vast amount of experience for his years, having over 240 games worth of experience in his short career so far.
Over 100 of those have been spent in the Premier League with Southampton, where he has also picked up five England caps since 2014.
Many see Clyne as England’s first choice right back for many years to come, and one of the best in the Premier League so managing to get him for such a small fee can be seen as a real coup for the club, particularly as the man he is replacing (Glen Johnson) cost the club £18.5 million a number of years ago.
The defender will become the club’s sixth summer signing and will further strengthen a Liverpool squad that is really beginning to look deep with quality.
Welcome to Anfield, Nathaniel Clyne!
