Brendan Rodgers: The Puzzle

Has the Liverpool manager lost faith in his approach, or does he have a longer term plan?

Has the Liverpool manager lost faith in his approach, or does he have a longer term plan?

Welcome to the club Nathaniel Clyne! I am excited to see him in action, and another great signing from the club in this so far impressive off-season. After Stoke not many of us were optimistic, but this has lifted my spirits again.

In reading Clyne’s first interview I was struck by a couple of things. First of all, he is excited to be here.  He seemed ecstatic to have made the move. He wants to win and make a name for himself. That kind of mentality fits in well at Liverpool and I am hopeful he will make an immediate impact.

More importantly Clyne heaped praise on Rodgers. When asked about the gaffer he said, “he works with young players and helps them progress. I still think there is a lot to come from me and hopefully he can bring the best out of me.”

This is not uncommon from Liverpool players. Many of them heaping praise on Rodgers. Gerrard has praised him, as have many others. The players seem to love Rodgers and there is no doubt that he brought out the best of many players, including turning Suarez into the world beater he is now. On top of that Brendan, with strong support from FSG has been remarkable in the transfer window. He has been impressive during the break.

Yet I am concerned by the continued pursuit of Benteke. Most of the current players seem to fit into Rodgers’ system perfectly. Clyne and Firmino embody Rodgers philosophy. Milner is an all around hustler and could fit into any system. But Benteke seems to be after the pattern of Balotelli or Lambert. A big man doesn’t work in our system.

After Rodger’s quickly got rid of Carroll it seemed that would not be his striker approach.  Yet Benteke continues to be the club’s #1 target striker target.  To me Mario Gomez, Bacca (though now gone), or a similar poacher would make far more sense.  And fit in well with the creative forces of Coutinho and Firmino, even Henderson.

Either Rodgers see’s something in Benteke that none of us do, or he doesn’t believe in his own ideology.

I have to believe that Rodgers sees things in a long term perspective, and that he believes in his vision. Benteke is a proven goal scorer, and at Aston Villa (a constantly disappointing team). If Benteke comes I will give him the benefit of the doubt. And in the meantime I will continue to put faith in Rodgers. He has a vision. Ideas for the club. He needs to act in confidence and stick with what has worked. Two steps forward, one step back. Liverpool will continue to advance.

(Yet I am concerned by the continued pursuit of Benteke). There is no pursuit except in the tiny minds of so called journalists.

Brendan is a top quality manager but some of his/FSG signings havent worked as expected. generaly, most of his signings are quality players but not world class i.e Lallana Markovic Moreno Can Sturridge Coutinho Allen Ilori Sakho mignolet Lovern (Clyne, firmino, milner). these are quality players but expectations at liverpool are so high that such players dont live up to. given time i believe players like markovic ilori lovern would settle into the team and do wonders. i believe Brendan would take us forward but Brendan has to stick with one permanent formation (4 3 3 or 4 4 2 diamond) instead of changing it

Yes 433 /442 is the key Henderson should be our marker not over looking for goal but if goal opportunity comes, good.

Rodgers a top quality manager? You are away with the fairies. He is like a general who wins the small skirmishes and loses the big battles.
Pragmatism is not part of his nature. Naïve, indecisive, surrounds himself with yes men because he is the ultimate yes man.
My team would have finished 2nd had I the best player ever to play in the top division of the English league (anyways since 1963)
You have to mast the dark arts of foot ball, play nasty when you have to , show power and pace. Could this guy ever have signed Hamman, Hughes, Smith etc. No, Joe Allen is his type a£2m player masquerading as a £15m
He is a Hodgson in disguise

Well said terys spot on. Glad to hear someone who tells it how it is. I am fed up listening to delusional fans who are clueless about Rodgers, we will win nothing that matters while he is at the club. He will lose a generation of foreign supporters if he is allowed to continue buying the second rate players that are not good enough to play for us. He will set us back years with his bull…t. Get rid of him before it is too late.

To right you are,B.Rodgers a top coach hahahaha his a joke and will be found out again this term. Why he didn’t jump at the chance to get Bacca no one knows, except the little mad man in B.R head. The knives will be out for B.R sooner rather then later.

  • Diego Digger Souness says:

Clyne will go backwards under Rodgers shambolic defensive coaching, not one defender has improved under Rodgers 3 years. Clyne would actually have developed better defensively at Southampton but he’s just here for the money and fame

  • Lekan says:

Last season, we all saw how lfc looked clueless on how to get goals against some stubborn defences. What I see with Benteke is a plan B striker. He will help on occasions when what is required is ruggedness to get goals. I support BR on this.

    • 666v1nny says:

Think you’ll find we’ve already got 3 plan B strikers.Borini, Balottelli & Lambert.BR has continually shown he doesn’t want to or know how to use them.so why spend £30mil + on a plan B striker especially an injury prone one

  • Lekan says:

I see Benteke as a different type of striker from Balo and Lambert. He’s faster, more skillful and sharper at shooting. Borini is perspiration without focus on the net. What of headers, oh my, the guy can be dangerous on his day. He’s had many of them.

    • Stan says:

You fail to acknowledge that all 3 of those strikers u are putting down were also scoring goals for fun at their previous clubs. Rodgers simply does not know how to use them . He’s clueless

      • Boo Riley says:

If you’re talking about Balo, Lambert and Borini, surely you mean they were scoring penalties for fun at their old clubs.

        • Abraham says:

When penalties don’t account for up to 40% of your total gials scored then it isn’t significant. None scored penalties significantly so your claim is void.

  • Boo Riley says:

None of the three were particularly prolific in open play.

  • Joe says:

Mr Roger,,we need 2things to balance our team:1,holding midfielder like xavi and 2,goal machine who can dribble tricking, good in d air and can also create chances for others as team work.or a winger like Rubben a great threat to defenders and one scores like Di Maria,Ronaldo.Another eye brow question is who is our Free kick specialist this also bring in goals.

  • Liverpool forever says:

    Brendon Top Class Manager ??
    How and where ??
Just look at his empty cabinet !!!!!!
How many trophies he has won so far?? ZERO
thanks for still managing our club

  • David says:

If we are honest , we are angry with Rahim as we know what type of player he can become . 50 mil is going to look like a cheap bargain in 4 years . But our problem is not the front 3 right now, it’s the midfield trio that were hopeless last season are the same apart from Milner for Gerard . Can is decent but learning, Allen has a 95% pass accuracy if he passes sideways or backwards, 40% if forward pass , Henderson probably one of the most technically gifted players who doesn’t posses a football brain. He is like a robot who can hit perfect crosses or passes but will still attempt the pass if there are 3 people in the way to block it, he hit the referee 3 times last season from a distance if 1 meter from a set pieces ! So sell sterling but please invest in kovacic and illeramandi , without them we will have more of the same this season
