James Milner has already been highly impressive in pre-season at Liverpool

There’ll be a few contenders as the season draws ever near, and there’ll undoubtedly be a few less once the season draws to a close, but one man in particular has no doubts as to who the signing of the season is already.

Former England star, Stuart Pearce, believes that Liverpool have made the signing of the summer in James Milner from Manchester City. In term of pure value for money, he’s probably not wrong, as things stand. Liverpool have got themselves a bonefide top class midfielder for nothing but a signing on fee and his wages.

Speaking to Colin Murray on his talkSport show, Pearce said: “He will be their best trainer, he will be on the training pitch for longer than anyone. He’s a fantastic signing.

“He’s low maintenance, never in newspapers, fantastically professional, and plays to a standard of six-and-a-half, seven every week. That is all you want as a manager.”

Whilst he can’t be accused of being spectacular, Milner has quietly created a reputation for himself as a strong-willed, hard working midfielder, with great technical ability and a seemingly boundless engine.

The former Villa and Man City player had one of his best seasons to date last season, when he was initially used sparingly before forcing himself to becoming one of the first names on the team sheet, and easily his best at the Etihad, and in another summer he may have commanded a fee of around £20 million, quite easily.

If the Reds can get the same out of him that his prior club did last season then Pearce may well end up being proven spot on.

Is Liverpool’s new boy the signing of the summer so far? Let us know your thoughts below.
