James Milner

For many, this one might be a no-brainer, as he brings with him more experience than most of the current Liverpool squad, in terms of Premier League trophies, Champions League appearances, amongst other things. Not to mention he has fourteen season’s worth of Premier League experience and 54 England caps. Those figures alone would see Milner walk into most clubs and have the captain relinquish the armband to him.

But, as Milner himself admits, Liverpool isn’t just any club; LFC is a special club, one that many footballers dream of playing for and, despite being vastly experienced at 29 years of age, Milner has only just arrived at Anfield.

Despite his credentials, Milner being appointed as vice-captain would be a slap in the face for a number of current Reds players. He’s a top professional – one of the best – and his attitude and work-rate will remind Reds of what we lost when Dirk Kuyt left. He’s also almost certain to become a firm fan-favourite for those very reasons, but any form of captaincy should only be considered when the next four options are exhausted.
