Reds legend Phil Thompson believes Rodgers needs more time

After a very poor start to the current season, manager Brendan Rodgers is again being pilloried by fans for what is perceived as a failure to learn from the mistakes of the past three years, and continuing to make the same mistakes repeatedly.

The Reds began the season with two narrow wins and a credible 0-0 at the Emirates, only for the fragile foundations of that promising start to come crashing down after a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham and a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United last weekend.

Many fans and pundits believe Rodgers is now on increasingly borrowed time but former Liverpool assistant manager and playing legend, Phil Thompson, believes that the 42 year old should get more time.

Speaking via the Liverpool Echo, Thompson said: “I believe he deserves more time.

“You can’t let the man spend all that money and bring all those players in and then five, six or seven games in he has to move on.

“That decision can only be determined on results and he has to turn round the flow.”

Thompson is all too aware of the pressure that comes with managing a club like Liverpool, having briefly looked after the team in the absence of Gerard Houllier. The former centre back believes that Rodgers deserves all the criticism he has coming but that he has some work to do to turn things around.

He continued: “I believe he should be given the opportunity to see it through, but the bells will be ringing by Christmas time if fortunes have not turned round.

“I don’t need to tell Brendan that, he will understand that, but results have to pick up.

“We’ve got Everton coming up in two weeks’ time and that will be a massive game.

“That is going to need far more application and attitude from the players than what they showed at Old Trafford.”

After a draw in the Europa League at Bordeaux in the week, the pressure will be on Liverpool to put in a performance and get a positive result on Sunday or Rodgers will find the pressure on his shoulders ramping up even more.

Do you agree with Phil – does Rodgers warrant more time to turn things around, or does he have to go? Let us know your thoughts on Thompson’s comments.

You can’t be buying 6-7 players every year and expecting them to gel. His time is running slim!!!

BR doesn’t need more time,he needs wisdom to realize that players perform better when played in their natural positions. The only time he needs is #timetofindanotherjob

He has had enough time. I’d say give him more if he was showing any signs of learning, but his selections go from bad to worse. To keep persisting with Lovren is beyond belief, linked with the treatment of Sakho. No, he has squandered the time he had
