Player ratings: Norwich 4-5 LIVERPOOL

|
The veteran centre back was in good form but looks to be another casualty

Toure and the defence had a day to forget today

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Remember what we said about Mignolet last week? Well, for him you can just rinse and repeat; as a last line of defence he’s nowhere to be seen. Questions will continue to be raised about keeping him on board and it’s looking more and more likely that the contract was simply to retain his value until he’s sold in the summer. Rating – 4

Nathaniel Clyne – Very good going forward but as part of the defence, he will have to should some of the blame. Rating – 6

Kolo Toure – It was all going so well for Kolo, then Norwich happened. He was far from the worst of the backline but experience counts for nothing on days like today. Rating – 4.5

Mamadou Sakho – Sakho continues to confound. It appears there might be a solid defender in there (somewhere) but he put in as bad a defensive display as we’ve seen from either Skrtel or Lovren in recent years. Absolutely awful and, after almost three years at the club, we really need more from the player many rate as the Reds’ best centre back. No leadership, poor organisational skills and still shaky in possession. Rating – 4

Alberto Moreno – If Sakho was the worst of the centre backs, Moreno was easily the worst defender today full stop. His progress has wavered in recent weeks in that regard and he slipped back to the Moreno of late 2014-15 today. Constantly caught out and lacking concentration. His challenge for Norwich’s penalty was a little harshly punished but just sums up his lack of maturity, still. Rating – 4

I am relieved that we managed to win this match, but l am really concerned with our defence. This is an issue that has been an eyesore and has not been rectified since Brendon Rodgers took over from Kenny Dalglish and the LFC hierarchy decided to let Steve Clarke go. Steve Clarke managed the defensive side of the team and we had the best or second best defence record in the EPL for the one and a half seasons that Dalglish and Clarke were in charge of the team. The team created lots of scoring chances, but just failed to score as we hit the woodwork a record number of times in that period.

Klopp needs to get a defence coach and replace the current goalkeeping coach. I am certain a good defence coach will improve our team’s defending, and also identify better defenders to buy if the current ones can’t be improved. A better goalkeeping coach might be able to improve Mignolet’s error prone goalkeeping, and hopefully also identify a better goalkeeper to replace him as number one goalkeeper. Mignolet and Ward can then fight for 2nd spot, but Bogdan should be sold as he is hopeless.
