Player ratings: Southampton 3-2 LIVERPOOL

|
Sakho was superb on the night and kept most of United's attacks at bay

Sakho was good once again but was powerless to halt a second half capitulation

GK/Defence

Simon Mignolet – Did well to save the Southampton penalty but got nowhere near the home team’s three goals. Rating – 6

Jon Flanagan – The Scouser was captain for the day and did well in the first half, getting forward to assist attacks and looking solid at the back. Takes a lot of the blame for Southampton’s second goal though and was visibly rattled in the last 15 minutes. Rating – 5.5

Mamadou SakhoThe least culpable for the defensive collapse but his inability to quickly adapt to Skrtel’s introduction didn’t help. Made some telling challenges and interceptions. Rating 6.5

Dejan Lovren – The problems began after Skrtel was introduced but don’t fool yourselves into thinking Lovren was superb in the first half. The Croatian defender dealt with Pelle better than Skrtel did but was lucky to not have given away an early penalty and later received a yellow for his troubles. Rating – 6.5

Nathaniel Clyne – Solid at left-back but offered little getting forward from this unfamiliar position. Klopp will soon have to decide whether Clyne or Flanagan is his first choice right-back and look at the left-back position more closely, in terms of whether Moreno is the long-term answer. Rating – 6
