Liverpool midfielder Emre Can says Reds vice-captain James Milner has made a seamless transition from playing in midfield to being a makeshift left back under Jurgen Klopp this season.

The 30 year old has become the German manager’s first choice in the position ahead of the error prone Alberto Moreno and Can told the club’s official website that the ease in which Milner has switched position has surprised many:

“It has surprised a lot of people, because it’s not easy to play at left-back from midfield. But Millie did it very well and I think he has scored more goals than last year in this time. He’s a very important player for us. He has to keep going like that and the team has to keep going like that.”

Can meanwhile has struggled for game time so far this season despite being an ever-present under Jurgen Klopp last campaign. However, the hamstring injury which Georginio Wijnaldum sustained against France for the Netherlands in the World Cup qualifier last night opens up an opportunity for the 22 year old to start against Manchester United on Monday night.

Whether Klopp opts to start Can in a holding midfield role where Jordan Henderson has been playing and move the Reds captain further forward will be a key debate amongst Liverpool fans before kick off against United.
