According to Football Insider, Liverpool are in the race with several other Premier League clubs to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Liverpool are gearing up for a transformative summer, with Jurgen Klopp leaving the red side of Merseyside and an entirely new management team taking over for the next chapter.

Michael Edwards has returned to the club to oversee operations, while Bournemouth sporting director Richard Hughes will join the six-time European champions to front the recruitment of new players alongside the all-but-confirmed new manager, Arne Slot.

The Reds are not having the fairytale ending to their last season with Klopp, as they have in recent weeks been knocked out of the Europa League and, in the Premier League, have become the outsiders in the title race after a string of poor performances.

While it will be frustrating and disappointing for the Anfield faithful, the latest drop in form will give the incoming decision-makers a much clearer insight into what will need prioritising when it comes to improving the squad for next season.

Football Insider have reported today that Liverpool will have to fight off both Arsenal and Manchester United to secure a deal for Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi this summer.

As per the report, the Merseyside giants are plotting to bolster their defensive presence and have identified Guehi as a potential successor for Joel Matip who will be out of contract this summer and, at this moment in time, set to leave the club.

Should Liverpool sign Marc Guehi?

There is no doubt that Guehi is an exciting young talent and has not only impressed in South London, but has caught the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate, leading to nine caps in the senior squad.

Unfortunately the centre-back has suffered a knee injury that has seen him sidelined since February, however, with a return imminent there may be an opportunity for him to impress Southgate enough to secure his spot on the plane to the Euros in Germany this summer.

While Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarrell Quansah have shown strength and resilience in the centre-back roles this season, there is no way of ignoring that Liverpool have struggled to keep a clean sheet in the league this season.

In fact, the Kopites have only managed to keep nine clean sheets out of 35 fixtures played so far which is incredibly poor considering Arsenal have kept 16, Everton 12 and Manchester City 11, so there is definitely room for improvement next season.

Guehi – who was referred to as an “absolute tank” by former Stoke City goalkeeper Josef Bursik – is often found on the left side of the centre-back partnership, however, the right-footed England titan is comfortable playing on both sides which will be massively advantageous as he could equally be a fantastic successor for Van Dijk, who is reaching the latter stages of his career.

With that being said, Liverpool would need to make a lucrative offer that Palace would struggle to refuse if they were serious about snatching the services of Guehi, but will also now have to worry about their Premier League rivals also competing for his signature too.
