Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says he appreciates the backing he is getting from fans despite being dropped from the starting line up by Jurgen Klopp in recent weeks.

The Belgian international said he was “hurt” by the Reds boss’s decision to leave him out for the last three matches but he is staying professional and is hopeful of a return to first team action after the international break against Manchester United. He is quoted by the Liverpool Echo as saying:

“Every time you sit on the bench it hurts,” he told reporters in Belgium. I’m also a lot more nervous on the bench than on the pitch. But the intention is to play again as soon as possible. The important thing is that I try to handle to situation the best I can. I think my response has been positive. It was also appreciated by the supporters.”

Klopp did mention in an interview a few weeks ago that he wanted to see both keepers in action before the international break, and he would then make a decision on who is number one. We will find out on Monday on what decision the German has made. His replacement Loris Karius has had a shaky first few matches in goal for the Reds so it will be interesting to see whether he keeps faith with the 23 year old for such a crucial match.
