Why this could actually benefit Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby believes the Reds’ defensive lapses will actually benefit the team this season as it will prevent the players from becoming complacent.

Writing in his column for the Liverpool Echo, the ex Red thinks being kept on their toes by failing to keep clean sheets will keep the players sharp at the other end of the pitch:

“The players know. When we concede a goal there is no warning, whether it’s Hull City, Tottenham in the cup, Palace last week, whatever. From nowhere, it’s in the back of the net.”

“Now this sounds a bit mad, but I think it helps the team to stay sharp, because they know that they can’t be complacent, and that they might need to pick it back up again if and when they concede.”

“At Palace, they shot themselves in the foot a couple of times, but they stayed on their toes and let their quality do the talking. If what we’ve seen in the first 10 games is what we’ll see for the rest, it’s going to be some season isn’t it?!”

Liverpool have only managed one clean sheet in the league, and that came in the 0-0 stalemate against Manchester United when it was very clear that Jose Mourinho’s side set up to come away with a draw.

The Reds cause won’t be helped by individual mistakes, and Dejan Lovren in particular won’t want a repeat of his display against Crystal Palace last week where he was at fault for both goals. His miss kick allowed Palace midfielder James McArthur to score the first equaliser while he was out-jumped in the box for McCarhur’s second.
