Liverpool to swoop for Lijnders

Liverpool are considering offering former coach Pep Lijnders a place on Jurgen Klopp’s backroom staff, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim that Lijinders only left Anfield in January but could make a swift return to the Reds after his exit from Dutch side NEC Nijmegen last weekend.

The Telegraph report that Klopp is in need of more staff as Lijinders is still yet to be replaced and because assistant manager Zeljko Buvac is unlikely to return the club.

Buvac is still an employee at the club but is currently not set to be involved with the first-team until the end of the season, as previously reported by the BBC.

It is believed that Lijinders’ return to the club will depend on whether he sees his future as a No.1 at another club or in a supporting role at the Reds.

Klopp publicly revealed how highly he rated Lijinders upon the coach’s Anfield departure as he shared how gutted he was to lose him.

“I am gutted to be losing such a valuable member of our coaching team and such a brilliant person from our group,” Klopp said, as quoted by the Telegraph.

OPINION

The Telegraph’s report goes onto reveal that Klopp rates Lijnders highly and it would be some welcomed good news if he was to return soon. The coach’s return will be remarkably swift, shown by the fact the Reds haven’t even brought in a replacement as of yet. It’s clear that there will be new faces amongst Klopp’s backroom staff soon enough, it’s just not confirmed who the new senior figures at the club will be. Buvac is currently away on personal leave and it’s easy to believe The Telegraph’s report that he is likely to leave the club as loads of rumours circulated about why he was taking a back seat until end of the season. However the club confirmed it was down to personal reasons and there’s no reason not to trust the Reds’ official statement on the matter. While clearly Lijinders’ time away from Anfield didn’t go as planned, as he is already on the market again, if Klopp rates him highly, it’s easy to see that he’d be an ideal replacement for Buvac.
