Solanke would rip up Scottish league

Steven Gerrard has been linked with some big-name deals since he was appointed Rangers manager in a move that raised eyebrows north and south of the border.

Unsurprisingly, reports have centred on the Liverpool icon’s intention to use his Anfield connections to invigorate a pretty mediocre Light Blues team.

The Daily Record claim that Gerrard has opened talks via third parties aimed at signing Solanke this summer as he targets rising stars who Jurgen Klopp might be willing to allow out on loan to gain first-team experience.

Indeed, it is said that sources on Merseyside believe the new Rangers boss can use his ‘close relationship’ with Klopp to strike a loan deal for Solanke.

It would be a blinding move from Gerrard if he could pull it off.

Solanke has been on the fringes of the Liverpool side for most of his debut campaign since joining from Chelsea, but has still accumulated 27 first-team appearances, mostly as a substitute.

There is certainly no shame in playing second fiddle to forwards of the world-class calibre of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Crucially, Solanke has the qualities of touch, mobility, power and aerial prowess to make an impact in the Scottish League.

His finishing needs work, but that would come through more regular football as well as the confidence gained from achievement. His first Liverpool goal last weekend would certainly have helped on that score.

Solanke is a versatile forward who can lead the line or play out wide, although his 6ft 1in frame means he’s well suited to playing with his back to goal, something Rangers desperately need.

His wages, which the Daily Star report are worth £25,000-a-week, are also within range for Gerrard’s new club, especially if Rangers agree to pay around two-thirds of them rather than the full salary.

Solanke would be a brilliant signing and a real statement of intent if the new regime can pull it off.
