Besiktas have made Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge their top priority this summer as they look to sign a proven striker, according to Fanatik.

The Turkish newspaper claim the 2016-17 Turkish champions held internal talks over the weekend in which manager Senol Gunes made it clear to president Fikret Orman that he wants the Anfield outcast.

Fanatik report that Sturridge has jumped to the top of the Besiktas target list after slipping down the pecking order at Liverpool, where he has a year remaining on his contract.

OPINION

Such is Sturridge’s talent and capacity for brilliance, it is a crying shame his body struggles to stand up to the rigours of top-class football. The 28-year-old should be leading the line for England at the World Cup – as he was in Brazil four years ago – rather than looking for a  club way down the elite football chain who are willing to grant him regular football next season. Sturridge’s loan spell at West Brom was a write-off, with injuries once again the cause. There is no surely no way back for him at Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp demands his forwards are either super-quick or super-hard working. Sturridge is neither. He is a superb player who picks and chooses his moments, but he is not what Klopp is looking for. Most clubs would love to have such a clinical finisher on their books, but most can’t afford wages Spotrac claim are worth £130,000-a-week. A summer move is a certainty, but there will need to be some serious negotiating before a deal can be done.
