Jon Flanagan is set to become Rangers’ seventh summer signing after being given his marching orders by Liverpool, according to the Glasgow Evening Times.

The Scottish newspaper claim new Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard is set to take another player he knows well from his former club following the loan capture of Ovie Ejaria among the Light Blues’ other six new arrivals.

The Glasgow Evening Times report Liverpool academy product Flanagan, 25, is “closing in” on a move north of the border after the Merseysiders announced on their official website on 8 June that he would leave when his contract expired at the end of this month.

OPINION

Flanagan has failed to resurrect his career at Liverpool after suffering a series of shattering knee injuries that put paid to his hopes of making it under Jurgen Klopp. Good enough to make 51 appearances for the Reds and earn international recognition, he came to the fore by performing with aplomb under Brendan Rodgers in the side that finished second in 2013-14. The versatile full-back is predominantly a right-sided defender but has also showed he can deliver the goods on the opposite flank, which is the kind of pedigree Gerrard will need as he rebuilds a Rangers team that were hopelessly outclassed by Celtic last season. Gerrard knows Flanagan’s qualities as well as anyone, and could regard him as a low-risk signing given that he can join on a free transfer from the end of this month. If those injury problems are firmly behind the Scouser, he could turn out to be a fine signing.
