Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has revealed he will assess his future at Anfield after his participation in the World Cup.

The 30-year-old is currently on international duty with Belgium, who have reached the last 16 of the major tournament, and is acting as a back-up option to Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois in goal.

He endured a miserable second half of the campaign at domestic level with the Reds, as he lost his number one spot to teammate Loris Karius and has not played since January.

Mignolet has explained that he will have to consider his Anfield future once Belgium’s involvement in this summer’s World Cup is over.

“I am going to look at my situation when I come back from the World Cup,” Karius said, as quoted by the Guardian.

“At this moment I have not been speaking to anyone at Liverpool because I have been trying to focus on Belgium.

“But I didn’t play in the last few months at Liverpool, so after the World Cup I will look at everything. I can’t say much more. I don’t know how long I will have off after the tournament. I need to speak to the manager about that.”

OPINION

Mignolet’s immediate focus is understandably on his nation going all the way at the World Cup and he could be the man to step in if Courtois picks up an injury. However, when his attention returns to his club future it will be a major surprise to see him remain at Anfield next season. The Belgian has had to go through spells in and out of the team under manager Jurgen Klopp, which ultimately suggests he will never be convincing enough to be the number one. Mignolet can on his day be a world-beater and be an excellent shot-stopper, but has too many mistakes in him and has cost the Merseyside club games on several occasions. Liverpool have been linked with a handful of goalkeepers and there could be a major reshuffle in net this summer. Mignolet still has a respectable record of 66 clean sheets in 202 senior games for Liverpool, which is why finding a new home for next season shouldn’t be too difficult.
