Former Liverpool ace Jan Molby has delivered a glowing verdict on new signing Fabinho, claiming the £39million man is ‘a million miles ahead’ of former teammate and Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The Reds completed the signing of the Brazil international from Monaco this week under the radar, with no media outlets getting a hold of the news until just hours before it was broken by the club.

Molby has now delivered his verdict on the signing, drooling over his spell at Monaco and predicting how he would slot in under Jurgen Klopp at Anfield next season.

In a column for the Liverpool Echo, he said: “Liverpool’s signing of Fabinho was proper old school. Nobody saw it coming. And he will be a really good addition to the Reds squad. Fabinho has nearly everything you need in a modern midfield player, being mobile, young and a good reader of the game.

“I was really impressed with him when whenever I watched Monaco during their season when they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2016-17. I thought he was a million miles ahead of his midfield partner Tiemoue Bakayoko, who is at Chelsea now.

“Fabinho is a typical Jurgen Klopp player. He is always where you want your midfield player to be, and is never out of position. He doesn’t do things for the sake of doing them, he keeps it simple, he is mobile, he doesn’t commit an awful lot of fouls.”

OPINION

It is massively surprising that a club of Liverpool’s profile were able to pull off such a secretive signing in this day and age. The media are usually so on top of anything and everything come out of the top clubs that rarely a day goes by without a new leak coming out. Not in this case however, and Liverpool have, as Molby says, pulled off a blinder by signing Fabinho. The Brazilian midfielder will offer them mobility in the middle of the park and a brilliant passing range to boot, with his versatility allowing him to fill in at right-back if needed as well. £39million is a pretty reasonable price in today’s market as well, and all in all it has been a brilliant week for the Reds. Attention will now inevitably turn to the capture of another Ligue 1 star, Nabil Fekir, who has been heavily linked for a long while now. Secure that deal and Liverpool will be in a seriously good position come August, with a new goalkeeper the other essential in the coming weeks.
