Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster will be sidelined for nearly two months due to injury, according to the Echo.

The regional newspaper claim the striker’s recovery from ankle surgery is going far slower than originally anticipated and he won’t be fit “until late August at the earliest”.

The 18-year-old underwent ankle surgery at the end of January after a heavy fall during an Under-23s match against Manchester City.

OPINION

Brewster’s rehabilitation from injury has gone far slower than Liverpool anticipated when he went under the knife at the start of the year to cure the ligament damage to his right ankle. The official Reds site claimed the rising star would be out for “three to four months”, but the Echo update suggests the timeframe will be sidelined for at least three months longer than originally expected. That is a major blow to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as he assesses his striker plans ahead of the new season. The German, who oversaw the squad as they returned to pre-season yesterday (Monday) will not be able to call upon the highly-rated Brewster in pre-season and will then have to ease him gently into the senior set-up. With Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge expected to leave in this summer’s window and doubts over the future of the returning Divock Origi, Klopp can clearly not rely upon just Roberto Firmino, rookie Dominic Solanke and an unfit and untested teen in Brewster. This should force his hand in the coming weeks before the 9 August deadline.
