Crystal Palace are making a last-ditch effort to sign Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic on loan, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper report that newly-promoted Cardiff City have already held talks with Liverpool over a return for the 22-year-old Serbia international following a loan spell in 2017/18, with the Reds open to the move.

The Mail claim that Palace have now launched a last-minute bid to hijack a deal for the 6ft 3in midfielder [Transfermarkt] with manager Roy Hodgson looking to bolster his squad before deadline day.

OPINION

Grujic impressed while on loan at Cardiff last season and it was thought that the young midfielder may be able to finally break into the first-team picture at Anfield this summer. However, the early arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho seemed to crush any hope of that happening, and a loan move has been likely since quite early on in the window. A return to Cardiff has been mooted for a while, and it is a move which makes perfect sense for all involved, but Palace’s late bid makes things even more interesting. If Grujic manages to get enough game time at Selhurst Park then you would think a move to Palace is the preferable option considering their status as an established top-flight side. That however is not guaranteed, whereas a move back to Cardiff would most certainly bring Grujic regular first-team football. It is a toss up that the Serbian must now analyse and decide which move is best for his career.
