Nottingham Forest striker Ben Brereton is in the running to be the next signing made by Liverpool, according to Football Whispers.

The English centre-forward – who has netted six goals in 39 appearances for Forest – signed for the club in 2015 from Stoke City’s youth squad.

Football Whispers – which is used by the likes of Sky Sports – rounds up claims of transfers from around the world and calculates the likelihood of a player signing for a club based on that information.

Brereton scored 2.9 out of five, meaning that is the second most likely player to make the move to Anfield after Lyon’s Nabil Fekir.

OPINION

This rumour by Football Whispers is a bizarre one. It seems to have popped up out of nowhere – it seems surprising that a young Championship player like Brereton is in the running to sign for a top Premier League club. Liverpool already have a number of strikers and attackers at their disposal, so it remains to be seen whether they would need him on the books. The only other option is that he is a player who could potentially join their under-21 squad – but it does not seem likely that they will sign him before the end of the window. He may be a talented player, but the link to Liverpool is incredibly surprising. Also, it is surprising that Nottingham Forest would potentially let him go – they have revamped their squad and are undoubtedly chasing promotion, so it would not make sense for them to get rid of a player who could make a difference to their bid.
