Liverpool have already made a solid group of signings this summer, but they still have not pursued any one to help cover the centre-back role.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has Joel Matip currently sidelined, which undoubtedly a major loss.

That leaves Virgil Van Dijk, who has been a mainstay in the Reds’ centre of defence since he arrived from Southampton in January this year.

Enter Burnley ace James Tarkowski, who the Independent have previously reported to have been linked to a move to Anfield.

Van Dijk needs someone of quality to partner him in the centre of defence – and Liverpool must pursue the previously linked star to install themselves as favourites for the title.

Tarkowski – who is on £22,000 a week [Spotrac] – has been excellent in boss Sean Dyche’s system throughout the duration of last season, which earned him a call-up to the England squad in March this year.

He is an arguably under rated centre-back that has been kept under the radar for some time – not many football fans will have heard of his name.

However, the way he performed for Burnley last season ensured that they finished seventh in the table and amongst the places for Europe.

He may not be the tallest of defenders – he stands at 6″1 [Transfermarkt] tall – but he is a hardworking player who is committed to the cause.

The Reds need to land a centre-back to help complete their transfer business, and Tarkowski fits the bill perfectly to play alongside Van Dijk.

Adding the 25-year-old to the squad would be the icing on the cake for Klopp – as it would mean that his side will be at full strength and more than capable of taking home the Premier League trophy.

Winning the title would mean everything to the Liverpool faithful – and swooping for Tarkowski to form a formidable partnership with Van Dijk will send them on their way.
