Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella has rejected a £3.5million move to Norwegian side Rosenborg, according to the Liverpool Echo

The regional newspaper report that the Spanish midfielder held talks with Rosenborg bosses but decided against the move despite Liverpool agreeing an initial £2.4million fee rising to £3.5million with add-ons, with a buyback option included.

The Echo claim that Chirivella is well aware he must leave Anfield to gain first-team football, but the 21-year-old midfielder is looking instead to remain in England or return to his native Spain after this U-turn.

OPINION

This is a big U-turn from Chirivella, with his move to Rosenborg looking all but done a few days ago. The Spaniard is obviously keen on securing a move to a club with a bigger profile as he looks to make his mark in the Premier League in the near future, but it is not known how many English clubs would be interested in a move for the 21-year-old. Chirivella is obviously a talented player, but just five senior appearances since joining the club in 2013 suggest he will never make a real first-team impact at Anfield. The club are obviously looking to cover their back by including a buyback clause should Chirivella blossom at his next club, and that is a sensible move. The club are likely to have been left frustrated by Chirivella’s rejection of Rosenborg after agreeing the terms of a deal, but they will also respect his decision to seek a move to a bigger club, which may end up helping them in the future.
