Liverpool Echo reporter James Pearce shared in his opinion that he would expect Liverpool to be keen on signing Borussia Dortmund attacker Christian Pulisic next summer if the player’s scenario stays the same.

The reliable journalist delivered his verdict on the Reds’ interest in the 19-year-old winger after he was asked during a Q&A for the Liverpool Echo (August 3, Friday 12:23) whether he thought the player was really a target for the club.

The Daily Mail previously claimed that Borussia Dortmund were looking to sell Pulisic in the current window for £65million and that he was a target for the Reds.

However Pearce revealed that in his opinion spending that amount money on a player who wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter at Anfield would make little sense.

“Yes I do, Klopp’s admiration for Pulisic is well known, he tried and failed to bring him to Liverpool two years ago when Dortmund refused to sell,” said the trusted reporter.

“Pulisic has developed a lot since then but he’s still far from the finished article. He only has two years left on his contract and if he doesn’t sign an extension I’d expect LFC to be keen next summer.

“The price tag would probably be more realistic then. As it stands at the moment he wouldn’t get into Klopp’s starting line up. Spending £60m/£70m on a squad player makes little sense.”

OPINION

It’s very likely that Pearce is spot on with his assessment of Liverpool’s interest in Pulisic as it makes little sense for the club to recruit before transfer deadline day. GOAL claimed earlier in the summer that the Reds would explore the possibility of signing the 19-year-old American in order to help lighten the work load of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, so seems likely that the club wouldn’t want to break the bank bringing in a player in order to be cover. Also since Goal’s report the Reds recruited Xherdan Shaqiri who should be able to help Salah, Firmino and Mane out when it comes to firing the Merseyside giants to glory next season. However Reds supporters can take hope from Pearce’s opinion that Pulisic could one day arrive at Anfield as the reporter clearly believes the excellent teen sensation is on the club’s radar even if his price tag is little above what they would look to pay  for him.
