Former Liverpool player John Aldridge has boldly claimed that his old club are yet to hit their top form this season.

Even though the Reds maintained their unbeaten start to their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 thumping of Southampton on Saturday, Aldridge still thinks that we have not seen the best of Liverpool yet.

However, he did add that the team’s mentality has changed this term – and the belief that they have in themselves will spur them on to do greater things.

“There is a visible change of mentality in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team this season. It’s not just down to key signings they have made in the last year. I look at the way this team is going about their business,” he wrote in his column for the Sunday World [as transcribed by the Irish Independent].

“Even though they have yet to hit top form in my view, they are a side that has a belief running through their veins that suggests they are ready to go to the next level.”

OPINION

It is hard to agree with Aldridge when he says that he thinks Liverpool have not hit their top form yet. If anything, they have reached their peak already, and they can only get better and better from here on out. They have improved significantly since last season, and that is the one thing that he has failed to recognise. How could Liverpool possibly get any better? The answer to that is winning the title – but they already look like major contenders for that after six wins out of six. However, he is right that they have the belief in themselves to do well. This team undoubtedly think that they are more than capable of matching Manchester City toe-for-toe this term, and why wouldn’t they? The Reds have just as much quality as City do, and they have even got one over them after defeating them several times last season. If Aldridge thinks that they have not hit their top form yet, then it will be rather exciting to see when they do.
