Former Borussia Dortmund right back Kevin Großkreutz has urged his old team mate Mario Gotze to reunite with Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The pair both enjoyed huge success under Klopp at Dortmund, winning the Bundesliga twice, while Gotze went on to score the winner for Germany in the 2010 World Cup final.

The 26-year-old’s career has stagnated since then however, and Großkreutz feels he should move to Anfield: “I’m very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him – and only him – every day,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track. Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

OPINION

It would make sense for Gotze’s career for him to join Liverpool, but would it make sense for Liverpool to sign Gotze? This isn’t the same player who shone for Dortmund in his first spell at the club, so Liverpool certainly wouldn’t be getting the player that he used to be. Perhaps Klopp is the man to rejuvenate the midfielder, certainly he seems like the likeliest candidate to do so, but there’s also the possibility that signing Gotze could turn into an expensive mistake for the club. Nor do the Reds particularly need the German at the moment. They have a bevy of world class midfielders, while there’s no way that Gotze could penetrate Liverpool’s explosive frontline at the moment. Großkreutz is obviously looking out for his former team mate’s best interests, but a move for 2018 Gotze may not be in Liverpool’s best interests. The club are moving in the right direction at the moment, and signing Gotze seems like it would be an unnecessary indulgence.
