Liverpool loanee Loris Karius has lifted the lid on his Anfield exit, and says that his relationship with manager Jurgen Klopp remains strong.

The German was sent to Besiktas this summer on a two year loan deal following two high profile errors in the Champions League final against Real Madrid in May.

And the 25-year-old has explained how the move came about: “Nobody told me to leave Liverpool,” he told German outlet Bild. “I didn’t run away from Liverpool. I am at an age where I need to play regularly. After Alisson Becker’s transfer I decided to move to Istanbul and join Besiktas.”

Karius also spoke about his relationship with Klopp: “I have no problem with Jurgen Klopp, in fact we have a great relationship, he transferred me from Mainz,” he said.

OPINION

Everything Karius is saying makes sense. He obviously made two huge mistakes in the Champions League final, and they were massive errors, but that hasn’t made him a bad goalkeeper overnight. Yes, he always has an error in him, but he also produced a pretty decent season up until the fiasco in Kiev in May. The fact that no one told him to leave Liverpool, too, is believable. Klopp has always been a fan of Karius, that much is clear, so it’s definitely within the realm of possibility that the Liverpool boss never told his compatriot to leave the club. Karius has actually shown a good attitude here. He wants regular football not to simply stay sitting on the bench at a big club. That’s refreshing in a day and age where goalkeepers spend years of their career as a number two. The 25-year-old wants regular football and, who knows, if he impresses at Besiktas he may come back to Anfield and have a decent career.
