If there is one thing that Liverpool are renowned for, it is a their current crop of attacking talent.

Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane – the list goes on, and so does the list of positive superlatives used to describe them.

That’s why the latest comments on Mario Gotze made by former Borussia Dortmund player Kevin Großkreutz – who was a star under Klopp – should only be taken with a pinch of salt by the Reds.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Großkreutz said: “I’m very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him – and only him – every day.

“Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track. Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

He is wrong, Gotze would not be a great fit for Liverpool – where would he fit in with the array of talent that they already have?

No manager wants a position too overcrowded, most certainly Jurgen Klopp, who worked with Gotze during his time at Dortmund – so these remarks do not really make sense.

Gotze has been out-of-sorts for a while and looks a shadow of the player that he used to be, and he is undoubtedly miles behind in terms of what Liverpool already have on their books.

Liverpool would be making a grave mistake if they swooped for the German in the January transfer window – he is not at the standard that the team have currently set for themselves.

Yes, Gotze does need to revive his career at another club – but that club should most definitely not be Liverpool at this moment in time.

They do not need to add any more reinforcements, and swooping for the Dortmund’s attacking midfielder would essentially be pointless.

There is no point fixing anything if it is not broke – and Liverpool cannot afford to make changes to their squad that could potentially have some altering consequences.

Gotze must stay at the Champions League side for the time being, as he is just not good enough to be playing at Anfield.
