Liverpool under-23s boss Neil Critchley has provided an injury update on defender Conor Masterson.

The 20-year-old remains sidelined with a knee injury that he sustained a few weeks ago, but Critchley has said that the young ace should return to full training next week.

Meanwhile, Critchley has also provided an update on Academy prospect Bobby Adekanye, who injured his ankle against Napoli in the UEFA Youth League before the international break – saying that it is “touch and go” in regards to his injury.

“Bobby is touch and go at the moment. He’s back running but is still feeling it a bit,” Critchley said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“Conor has been out for a couple of weeks and should hopefully be training with the team again next week. I won’t know whether we’ll have any of the first-team players with us until late on Friday or Saturday.”

OPINION

It must be a huge boost for Critchley that Masterson is on the comeback trail, as he is undoubtedly one of the Academy’s brightest prospects. He has had problems with his knee for a while now – he first injured it in the lead-up to the Champions League Final – so the fact that he could return to training next week will no doubt be very welcome. Masterson was named amongst the substitutes for Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final with Manchester City, so it is safe to say that the youngster is destined for big things. Critchley will have his fingers crossed that Masterson does not incur any more damage to his knee, as this will set him back even further. As for Adekanye, he has had some bad luck with injuries this season. This is the second time that he has been injured, which has no doubt hampered his progress slightly. It is not yet known when he will make a return, but Critchley can rest easy knowing that Masterson is on his way back.
