Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has claimed that Daniel Sturridge is among the best strikers in the world after the England international’s stunning equaliser against Chelsea on Saturday.

The 5ft 10in attacker [Source: Transfermarkt] came off the bench to draw the Reds level at Stamford Bridge, and Gomez was delighted with his team mate’s efforts.

“All credit to Studge – that goal showed his quality,” he told the Liverpool Echo. “I don’t think many players would even have taken on the shot from where he was. The angle was unbelievable.

“To have Studge fully fit and firing is massive for us this season. He’s right up there in terms of strikers in the world. We all know how good he can be. I am just happy for him. We were all buzzing that he was able to contribute like that.”

OPINION

While Sturridge certainly looks like he’s starting to get back to his best this season, it’s surely too early to start talking about him as one of world football’s premier frontmen. His impact on Saturday was phenomenal, and he’s done that a few times this season now. His header against Paris Saint-Germain and his goal against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup last week were both examples of what the 29-year-old can do when on the top of his game. Having the England international back to his best is such a huge boost to Jurgen Klopp, and the German will undoubtedly be thrilled with the striker’s efforts. Gomez is right that Sturridge will be an important player for the Reds this season, but it seems he just got carried away slightly when he claimed the former Chelsea man was up there with the best strikers in the world.
