Liverpool fans lay into Moreno v Cardiff

A number of Liverpool supporters have been laying into left back Alberto Moreno after his performance against Cardiff City on Saturday.

The left back was surprisingly handed a starting spot ahead of usual incumbent Andy Robertson, and he failed to take his chance in his team’s 4-1 victory, secured by goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane (twice) and Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Reds faithful were quick to give the former Sevilla man a piece of their mind, with many of them failing to understand why Jurgen Klopp dropped Robertson for the 26-year-old Spaniard.

COMMENTARY

The Liverpool fans do have a point, here. Klopp’s decision to replace Robertson with Moreno was probably more about giving the Scotland captain a rest, but it’s resulted in a pretty limp performance from the 26-year-old on the left hand side of the Reds defence. The team just don’t look the same without Robertson. The former Hull City man has become such a crucial player for the club and never was that more evident than against Cardiff on Saturday. It’s not just his solid defensive ability, it’s his penetrating runs down the left flank that give the opposition so much trouble. He is a tremendous crosser of the ball and he has an intuitive understanding with attacker Sadio Mane, something that Moreno cannot claim to possess. To be fair to Moreno he did play a small part in Mane’s goal to make it 2-0, but other than that it was a mediocre showing from the Spaniard and you can see why the Reds supporters were questioning his selection.
