A section of international fans have drooled over the display of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for England when they took on Croatia on Sunday.
England fought back from 1-0 down in this UEFA Nations League encounter at Wembley in order to win 2-1 due to a Jesse Lingard equaliser and a last grasp goal from Harry Kane – which now puts England through to the semi-finals of the competition.
However, despite the fact that Gomez did not get on the scoresheet, many fans were quick to heap praise on the young talent, with some comments including “Klopp masterclass” and “incredible talent”.
COMMENTARY
It is not a surprise in the slightest that fans have been heaping praise on Joe Gomez following this display for England – like one fan pointed out, it is easy to forget that he is only 21-years-old. If anything, the standout moment in his display yesterday was his throw-in that led to the equaliser from Lingard – which demonstrates just how useful Liverpool’s throw-in coach has been. Yes, admittedly he was a bit all over the place when it came to Croatia’s goal, but apart from that, he was a ‘top class’ player. It is no wonder Jurgen Klopp regards him as a mainstay in the first team – how could he possibly not after such an assured display for his country, even at such a young age? The fact that he is only 21 shows that he has a bright future ahead of him, but it also implies that he is only going to get better and better – something which may not seem possible at the moment.
