Former Liverpool man John Toshack has warned Jurgen Klopp that he must secure silverware this season or questions will be asked.
The Reds have made a terrific start to the campaign after a summer of heavy investment, and Toshack feels the time is now for Klopp and his team.
“If Liverpool don’t win a trophy this year then they’ve got a decision to make [about Klopp],” he told Football365. “Things look really good at the moment, but this is Klopp’s third full season at Liverpool and this is the acid test for him.
“You can be unlucky not to win a trophy, but at the top clubs that’s what matters. It’s such a fine dividing line, but when you’re at a club like Liverpool that’s what it’s all about.”

It’s hard to disagree with much of what Toshack says. It seems unlikely that Klopp will be sacked by Liverpool whatever happens this season, he’s simply built up too much goodwill for that to be the case, but if he doesn’t win a trophy this campaign then the pressure will seriously mount on the German. There are no more excuses for the Reds, that’s a fact. Klopp now has the squad of players that he wants and they have to deliver now if Liverpool are to take the next step and become serial winners. This is a massive club that is used to winning trophies – even if it’s not the Premier League, Klopp needs to secure some sort of silverware this term. Toshack is right, the line between success and failure at clubs like Liverpool is so thin. This is a make or break season for Klopp, having spent the last few years moulding his team into what he wants. He’s got the right players, and now they need to deliver for him.
