A number of international supporters have heaped praise on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk for his performance for the Netherlands against Germany on Monday night.
The Reds centre back fired home a stoppage time equaliser for his country in their 2-2 draw with Joachim Low’s side which saw the Dutch qualify for the Nations League semi-finals next summer.
Van Dijk’s fantastic club form clearly translated to the international stage as he produced a performance brimming with quality.
It’s hard for football fans not to get carried away with Van Dijk when he puts in such consistently excellent performances for both club and country. He’s made a wonderful start to the season with Liverpool and now he’s producing big displays on the international stage as well. The Netherlands needed somebody to step up late on against the Germans to ensure that they qualified for the Nations League semi-finals and that’s exactly what Van Dijk did. The former Southampton man’s place as one of world football’s leading defenders is long secured by now, but this was another reminder of his immense quality. You can totally understand the reaction of the international fans because Van Dijk was excellent again on Monday. The Netherlands have made a remarkable turnaround under manager Ronald Koeman, whose decision to make Van Dijk captain is now looking like an inspired one. It will be interesting to see how they do at the showcase event next summer.
